I saw Lulloff with the Cleveland Orchestra when he did the Dahl. Rick, do you have an idea of what he's playing? Answer: Thank you very much for your post about Professor Lulloff, Rick. I appreciate your efforts to keep California SOTW members informed of classical saxophone events in the area. I'm really looking forward to the recital. By the way, I heard you play an excerpt from the Desenclos "Prelude..." at a masterclass in San Jose with Dr. Otis Murphy. You blew me away with your tone quality and artistry. Answer: Originally Posted by jazfyrski By the way, I heard you play an excerpt from the Desenclos "Prelude..." at a masterclass in San Jose with Dr. Otis Murphy. I really had a great time and I think professor Murphy had some good things to say about everyone’s playing that day. Originally Posted by j44breaker Rick, do you have an idea of what he's playing? Answer: Prof. Lulloff was here at the University of North Texas to give a recital last week. The program was: Two Preludes (Chang) On again off again (Freund) Sonate (Denisov) Night Songs and Flights of Fancy (Ruggiero) Prelude, Cadence, et Finale (Desenclos) It might be different sice he will have a different accompianist (it was Jun Okada). BTW- he teaches at Michigan State University, not Eastern. Joey Answer: The San Jose State School of Music and Dance will be presenting the Premiere Saxophone Quartet in concert on Sunday, May 7, 2006. The concert begins at 7:30 pm in the Spartan Memorial Chapel on the San Jose State University campus (please note that is isn’t in the Music Dept. Concert Hall!) Tickets are available at the door for $7 general admission and $5 students and seniors. Answer: Upcoming Concert I would like to invite you all to my Faculty recital at San Jose State University. Best regards, Dale Wolford ------------------------ The San José State University School of Music and Dance Presents in a Faculty Recital Saxophonist—Dale Wolford October 10, 2006 San José State University will feature faculty artist Dale Wolford in recital on Tuesday, October 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the School of Music and Dance Concert Hall with pianist Victoria Lington and baritone saxophonist, Aaron Lington. The recital will feature a wonderful recent work by French composer Jean-Michel Damase—his “Trio” for soprano and baritone saxophones and piano. This piece recalls the music of Claude Debussy with it’s distinct “neo-impressionistic” style, but is firmly rooted in the 21st century. In celebration of the 100th birthday of American composer, Paul Creston, Dale and Victoria will be performing his “Sonata,” a masterpiece for alto saxophone and piano. Showing how the saxophone can “sing,” Dale will be performing “Six English Folksongs” by Ralph Vaughn-Williams and another masterpiece for saxophone and piano by John Anthony Lennon, “Distances Within Me.” The program will conclude with a very unique arrangement of George Gershwin’s “Three Preludes,” originally for solo piano, re-arranged for saxophone and piano by Russian arranger Galina Shaposhnikova. All School of Music and Dance concerts are open to the public in addition to the university community. Free parking is available after 6 PM in the City of San Jose parking structure located at 4th and San Fernando Streets directly across from the new Martin Luther King Library. Closer event parking is $8 and is available in the SJSU 7th Street Parking Garage, located at the corner of 7th Street and San Salvador in downtown San Jose. From I-280, exit at the 7th Street Exit and turn north onto 7th Street. The University and the Parking Garage are three blocks north on 7th Street. The School of Music and Dance is located just beyond the Event Center building, and faces a double row of palm trees. Admission prices are $10 General, $5 Student. Answer: 13th annual San Jose Saxophone Christmas For anyone that is interested, the will be held on December 16th. If you haven't attended this before, this event usually gathers over 200 saxophonists of all ages and abilities and performs two concerts of Christmas music in San Jose; one at Eastridge Mall and another at Christmas in the Park. I, unfortunately, will not be back home in time to do it this year :(. I would highly recommend to come out and participate! Its super fun and we usually get tv coverage from the local news. Plus, you get to meet all the saxophonists from the area and see the many exotic and rare saxophones that some people bring. Rick Answer: This is quite some time away but Dr. Tim McAllister will be giving the world premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Orchestra at the Cabrillo Music Festival in Santa Cruz, CA. It will be this August but I don't have any details yet.
