does anyone know where I can find a list of famous sax players' setup?

There are others as well, I just can't find them right now.

Answer:
Lockjaw?
I've wondered for a long time what Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis played. It was quite a distinctive sound. Anyone know?

Answer:
I've always wondered what Johnny Griffin played also. Anyone know this?

Answer:
I saw a King ad (early 60s?) where Griffin endorsed the Super 20. Later pix have him playing Selmers with some metal mpc with a Selmer-style (3 band metal) ligature – perhaps a Link?

Answer:
Thanks, Paul, I noticed he had "Griffin III" engraved into the end of his bell. Wait, maybe it was a "II". :?

Imonatrip,
I don't know his set-up, but I doubt it had much to do with his identifiable sound.
He had one of the most identifiable tones in jazz, alongside Paul Desmond. A lot of it was him, not the equipment. You might be able to sound sort of like him (same tone style), but he had that special edge to it that no one can attain.
I have a recording of him playing with JJ Johnson and Count Basie -- man, he could play that tenor like nobody else. I'd be interested on reading a book about him (if I can find one).

Answer:
I recall reading interviews in Downbeat (1970s) and the Saxophone Journal (early 1990s) on Johnny Griffin and Lockjaw. What I recall is that they both played Link STM 10*s with Griffin using a 2 reed and Lockjaw using a much harder reed (a 5?). Griffin used a King Super 20 in the 50s and 60s but made the switch to modern Selmers in the 70s. He was playing a post Marl VI Selmer the one time I saw him perform circa 1990. I caught Lockjaw performing at Bourbon Street in the 1970s in Toronto and he was playing a Mark VI with a Link STM mouthpiece. I unfortunately never saw Griffin and Lockjaw perform together. Love those recordings they did together. Phenomenal ideas, technique, etc. and such agressive playing styles. Tenors on testosterone!

Answer:
Griff's mpc
According to this () site, Griff used a #12 Link with La Voz medium soft reeds. Don't know about Jaws though.

Answer:
i talked to Johnny Griffin a few times when plays the village vanguard in manhatten.his setup is only a thing to reach his level of playing so he will take a link 10* and drill the crap out of it with a Black&Decker(favorite brand)till it's around a 14 according to him. always used soft reeds and always had the sound. fast articulations, even notes, wide range,multi-tempos any speed, and more ideas than a bop pianist. he says LOCKJAW hated using all the keys on the tenor to get his sound. useless was the side keys on tenor sax was what he said and Lockjaw din't like using them. he(JAWS) reached and pushed, shoved, mauled and played any notes  :idea1: he wanted and didn't care much for hitting notes square on when he was hot. in other words Lockjaw(Jaws) sound was simply him and nothing else. food for thought or more time in the woodshed?

Answer:
You also can check with John Laughter. He has a terrific book, that is constantly being updated, about players on Top 40 hits from 1955 to date including quite a number of players' set ups.
