Finally got to play a Jazzmaster
Question: I was at the delightful new Pico/Westwood GC today, to return some stuff I didn't need, when I saw a new Elvis Costello Signature Jazzmaster hanging on the wall. Naturally, I had to give it a spin. I plugged it into a Peavey Valve King (a nicely versatile amp, FWIW) and went at it. Now I know why these guitars have such a huge cult following. The rhythm/lead circuit is actually pretty intuitive, so the range of sounds is huge. Naturally, I had to take it into filthy distorted J. Mascis territory, but it's also a superb clean rhythm guitar. And yes, you can play jazz on it: five-dollar chords sound really great, with loads of clarity. About the only thing I couldn't do on it was palm-mute, but my Telecaster actually sounds pretty good at that. I didn't mess around with the vibrato at all, but I've heard that a well-lubricated nut and locking tuners solve any tuning problems pretty quickly. Overall, I was quite impressed. The EC Jazzmaster is a beautiful guitar, to boot. It's a good thing that I'm short on cash, because I'd be sorely tempted to get a used MIJ/CIJ Jazzmaster. Answer: Interesting, always wanted to try one myself. Disappointed the last time I saw Magic Slim cause he had switched to a Les Paul and it just didn't sound right with his style IMO. Answer: Despite playing tons of guitars, I've only played one Jazzmaster. The J Mascis sig. I couldn't stand it thanks to his specs. Basswood on a Fender? WTF IS THAT?! I think I'd really like a traditional Jazzmaster though. :idk: Answer: im in love with my jazz master now. well, im still in the honey moon stage, but the first night i had this guitar....i played it unplugged until 4 in the morning. also, i don't know if this comes across as weird.....but sometimes i just strum open strings with the guitar against my ear and listen.....the body resonates soooo well!!! Answer: Haven't played a JM since the 70's. Still don't know if I could get on with one, but every time I think of Nels Cline, I think maybe I should try one again. Answer: It's so interesting, because I love the jazzmaster tone (in recordings I admire), but when I picked up a vintage JM at a shop, I was thoroughly unimpressed. There might have been issues with the guitar, though, because it just sounded dead and uninspiring. I also tried the J Mascis sig and it didn't do anything for me either. I'm kinda hoping I don't find a good one, because I don't have the cash right now... And what are five-dollar chords? Answer: Why can't you palm mute a Jazzmaster? Is there something about the EC model that's different? Answer: Why can't you palm mute a Jazzmaster? Is there something about the EC model that's different? i think maybe it had the JM bridge cover on it? but still, i can PM my jazzmaster, just not as good. Answer: Gaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwd do I want an EC Jazzmaster. :( Answer: I've had my Jazzmaster for at least a couple of months now and I can still safely say it's my favourite of all my guitars. I hardly ever use any of my others with my band/when I'm recording anymore :thu: Answer: Why can't you palm mute a Jazzmaster? Is there something about the EC model that's different? The bridge falls over Answer: .....the body resonates soooo well!!! I was sanding the Lake Placid Blue finish off my CIJ last night, and when I flipped it over to do the back, the body was literally singing! There was this beautifull high pitched whirring noise when I was going over where the pickup cavities were that was music to my ears. Of course, you will all say that it was the guitar screaming murder because I was peeling its skin off with an orbital sander... but dif'rent strokes, ya know? I couldn't imagine sanding it off. :( Answer: LPB with a tort pickguard is definitely in my top 5 favorite guitar colors. Especially on Jazzmasters and Jaguars. I couldn't imagine sanding it off. :( I don't like the Tort on LPB, but on Sonic Blue, yeah! Answer: You'll like it better when its satin black with a black pickguard, and uncovered Seymour Duncan SJM-3's and 2's thrown in :D Answer: What kind of wood is the body made from? And what are five-dollar chords? The body is alder. I define a "five-dollar chord" as a seventh chord with upper extensions or a suspended third.
