Refinishing a VM
Question: Well, I really want a silverburst custom, but I can't justify spending all that money on one. Would it be a decent idea to buy a Les Paul Vintage mahogany and have it refinished to silverburst? I'd like to leave the neck rough like it is from the factory, but make it black. Anyone considered this, or am I just being crazy? Answer: It would end up just looking like a silverburst studio. TBH, a Silverburst just doesn't look right on a LP without binding. IMO, at least. :idk: Also, for less money, you could get an Epi and put some Burstbuckers in it. It may not be a Gibson Custom Shop model, but it will be silverburst. :idk: Answer: You craaaaazzzzy. But, I'd get a quote from some Luthiers or a wood shop on having some binding installed. Kitchen counter installers do similar work all the time. Since you're gonna strip everything off, go have some binding beveled in. It's not as difficult to do as you think. Then all you got to got to do is smooth it up, and refinish. Answer: Get a Silverburst Epi and enjoy the money you have left over. Answer: just buy a silverburst Agile Answer: It would end up just looking like a silverburst studio. Earlier that year, I had the Epi on order from MF for 45 days before I finally gave up in disgust and canceled the order. It was "in stock" the entire time, but they couldn't get their act together last summer, so I ended up with the Gibson instead. But yeah, grab the Epi and slap a BB1&2 combo in it and you should have a nice rocking machine. Answer: +1 on both responses. This black and white pic almost looks color Answer: ok, well, I'm not really looking for another Epi, and an Agile doesn't have the horn that I find so aesthetically pleasing. The problem with buying an epi is mainly this: Here's the Gibson model. Note the pattern of the finish. Now here's the Epiphone counterpart. I like the pattern of the Gibson Custom Shop one more than the one that extends up into the pickup switch area. That's why I don't really want the Classic Custom version either. That burst just doesn't look as good as the "teardrop" style. Is it really that bad of an idea? If I could, I'd keep the rough feel of the VM neck, and the raw feel of the body wood, but just make it in the burst I want. Answer: I kinda went through the same thing with my Faded V. Great guitar, but I badly wanted a Silverburst V. The Silverburst V Gibson has out now looks nothing like I want (no pickgaurd, open coil pups, etc) I would like to refinish it, but decided it would probably be more trouble than it's worth so I've done nothing with it. I notice that too that the silverburst Les Paul Classics they came out with have the same pattern at the Epi's. You have to get the $3500 Custom to get the proper pattern. LAME yeah, that's what I said at the bottom of my post there...it's really annoying not being able to get the friggin guitar I want...just a rough neck with a Silverburst finish. Is it so hard to make that? Answer: That's a sweet site, but I really don't wanna buy a Gibson and try to do the finish myself... Answer: well, you could sand the neck finish down to your liking to get a satin feel. I still don't wanna spend $3500 on a guitar :poke: Answer: I still don't wanna spend $3500 on a guitar :poke: why, when we're in such a good economic state in this nation? :p Answer: Reranch a VM! Just think of the thread it will make! :thu: Answer: Get a junker body from somebody here to practice on. If you screw up, strip it and start over. Once you feel comfortable with it, buy a VM and have at it. That really is about your only option. Professional guitar refinishing gets expensive.
