a couple of years ago, since then he's on my list of most eminent jazzers.

There is a kind of interesting documentary out that is in limited re- release, about his life. I think its called "Chet Baker Lost and Found."
Its hurt because they don't have rights to film of his great performances. Still it was really interesting.
Baker once beat out Miles Davis for best trumpeter during the '50s and also beat out Nat King Cole for best vocalist in a Downbeat poll in the same year.
He was a staggeringly handsome guy back then. Since they had so little footage of his performing, they spent a lot of time interviewing his exes. One GF from 1957 was fairly kind. (and still a knockout 30 years later when they interviewed her) but the others, plus his kids, just had wrath for the guy because of all his junkie manipulations.
He was a tormented guy, but he had this preternatural ability to look younger than his age at times, I suppose when he wasn't strung out on heroin. According to the movie, when they found his body in 1988, they thought he was only in his thirties. He was in his fifties.
I took my kid to see the movie and I'm really glad I did. It was a real object lesson on using drugs or dating guys who used drugs. This guy went from being an Adonis to being a wino on the H.
