NGD - Melody Maker

Question:
Courtesy of the spam thread, a WWBW price reduction, and the "gearup" code, this is now mine.
It's light, it's well built, the box is cute, and it sounds great!
I'm not sure your typical LP lover would like it. Here's why.
It's lighter, it's not chambered, no maple cap, no HBs, no stop tail, switch on the other horn, single coil pickups, chintzy little tuners, no binding, no big Gibby headstock.
But I'm not your typical LP lover. I have a couple, but I reach for a Strat first almost every time.
I own a 1959 Melody Maker.
This thing is CLOSE. The neck on this is a tiny bit thicker, and a little bit fuller (meaning the U shape is fatter).
These pups are great. That's all there is to it.
The tuners work well, and are branded Gibson deluxe on the back.
The strap buttons are tiny. I guess that is to keep the weight down and possibly emulate vintage buttons. Dunno.
The setup is adequate, and there is not point in talking about intonation with the stop tail bridge.
The wood is really nice on the body. Pretty consistent grain, and I can't find any joint where two pieces come together, or if there even is more than one piece of wood.
gripes:
The Gibson logo doesn't look centered to me.
There's dents in the back of the neck just below the nut.
The damn box rubbed a mar into the face by the bottom. Hard to see, but *I* see it.
Typical Gibson, in my experience. There, yeah I said it!
The box was factory sealed.
Still, I'll keep it.
I'm thrilled, but SX should make these and sell em for a 80 bucks. :D
And how cool would this look with a JJ Barndoor Tele finish? :D

Answer:
:thu: I was looking at that -- I just can't get past that headstock either (see my comment in the Bill Lawrence thread) and you are right -- that is DEFINITELY off center.... weird...
Glad it sounds great -- because that is kinda what it all boils down too.

Answer:
It IS made out of mahogny!:thu:

Answer:
this is the kind of guitar that will acquire much mojo over the years.
HNGD!

Answer:
It's pretty Mojo-ey right now. And yes, in 30 years it will be splendiferous!

Answer:
congrats! ive been looking at those myself, i think the white one is

Answer:
It's a gibby headstock, they just dont glue on the rest of the "book", hehe. More pure IMHO. Although the angle of both E strings is irksome.
Congrats!

Answer:
I had a 1980 double cutaway MM from 1980-86 (traded it for a Strat). It was a great little guitar, especially for slide. Congrats!

Answer:
I love those things. Congrats!:thu:

Answer:
QC. :cop:

Answer:
Very cool. I love basic guitars, and this one is about as basic as you can get. I like the headstock too. It's what Gibson used on the originals, so why would they change it now? HNGD

Answer:
I could live with everything but the tracks on the back of the neck.
Any kind of humbucker fit into these things? I just can't fathom mahogony guitars with single coils (except P-90's!)

Answer:
Congrats. I used to be a Libertines fan (when there were Libertines) and that was the first time I heard a Melody Maker rock out.

Answer:

Answer:
These are very P90-esque.

Answer:
ooooo there was a flyer in the box, some "Secret Sale"!
"Unadvertised Deals That Rawk!!!"
oooo look at the MM!
20 bucks off! Woohooo! That makes it only 379.99!!!
glad I missed that sale. :freak: 3 cheers for the Hot Deal thread!

Answer:
So, that neck is pretty much a baseball bat, right?
I tried one for like 3 minutes in a store, and put it down because it was un. comfortable. But my wrist had been acting up that day. And the store sold their only model. So I can't try it again.

Answer:
Interesting.
Not sure I'd pay full price for one though.
