A Friend Passed Today
Question: I didn't want to hijack the Ravages of Time thread, so...... I'm way older than you guys and today, helped bury and had a wake for a guy who was a few months older than me (smokers, beware!!). I have known G for 40 years. My geezer pals and I went around today saying stuff like, "Well, I wonder who'll be next?", and "There'll be one fewer next time!" and "I hope I die instantly of a massive stroke!", and similar geezerly shit. We kind of do things the way they ought to be done here. G was seriously declining over the last 3 weeks, so T, a carpenter, made him a beautiful pine box to his specifications. G's (the deceased) 2 sons and ex wife live in town and nearby, so when he slipped away this morning, P took his backhoe to the graveyard (adjoins my property) and dug the grave, his family washed him and put him in a quilt and into the box, and at 11:30 we let him down and our town militia fired a three round salute. A fifth of whiskey was passed around, a joined hand prayer for those who pray, a couple of verses of Amazing Grace, and then hand filling of the grave. It was a beautiful, if breezy day. Meanwhile my wife thawed 2.5 quarts of chicken-vegetable soup she had put by in the freezer, and made cornbread and white bread (already had a risen loaf) and we invited everyone to come over to remember G. About 20 people came by - a big bunch when the grave had been filled. I washed dishes and made sure the Neville Brothers were on the CD. It wasn't exactly sad because his passing was long anticipated. He inherited a lot of property here in town and when we were all young and crazy hippies, rented and sold it to us, making this place a a kind of mecca for the weird and people on the fringe. Lots of geezers my age stuck here because of G's role as slumlord and hippy real estate tycoon. G and I have not been close for a long time, but our roots ran deep. His kids and my kids are the same ages, and his ex-wife and my wife are tight friends. So his passing is a reminder that all things change and eventually come to an end. Answer: Wow. Sorry for the loss of your friend, Bob, but very classy of you to send him on like that. Answer: Sadly, we're getting to the age when this is happening way too often. I went to 7 funerals last year. Sorry for your loss, my friend.  Answer: Sounds like a nice send off, Bob. Answer: R.I.P. G Answer: Sorry, Bob. But, it sounds like your little town is nice place to depart this world. Answer: Sorry to hear Bob, you're a good guy with a big heart !! It is so sad to see a friend pass on, hope you keep your good memories intact. :) Answer: Sad. Answer: sorry Bob.RIP G. Answer: Sorry, Bob. But, it sounds like your little town is nice place to depart this world. I was thinking exactly the same thing. Answer: Well, as nice as any place to die I guess. I think most people would rather not, no matter where they are! Answer: Great sendoff, Bob. You guys are true friends. Note that I said ARE and not WERE... Very sorry for your loss, nonetheless. Answer: Sorry for the loss, SB, but as BS said, we need to get used to this...it'll be happening more frequently until our turn comes up... Just found it interesting that you folks were able to have a DIY burial...no morticians, no embalming...that's pretty  I've been to four funerals already in the last six months...the pace is quickening... Yeah, these things seem ever more frequent! 1. We are over on the western edge of the county far from the county seat 2. Rural cemeteries are managed by local cemetery committees that are pretty autonomous. 3. Embalming is only required if you are going to hold the body over 24 hours. 4. We have the local casket and grave digging expertise (carpenter's tools and backhoe) 5. Technically, state regs may call for a concrete grave liner, but who's to know? We aren't adjacent to a stream, spring or well, so fuck 'em. 6. G and his family knew what they wanted and lined up what they needed, so rock and roll ensued. Answer: Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return ( Genesis, I believe...) Answer:  Answer: slumlord?? the guy was a slumlord?? thats pretty serious evil shit. Answer: Sorry for your loss Bob, I carried one of my best friends to his grave last year. My condolences. Answer: slumlord?? the guy was a slumlord?? thats pretty serious evil shit. It's a figure of speech. Is there a Forum of the banned here? planet waves chord finder?
