Strat Set Up Question
Question: Got a MIM Standard Strat as a "project" guitar. It needs a set up. Am I correct in assuming heavier strings will cause the whammy bar plate to rise excessivley? If so, should I tighten the springs so that it lays completely flat or is a little lift desirable, to allow pulling up on it? Thanks! Answer: Yes, heavier strings will have higher tension (assuming you tune them to the same pitch) and will cause the bridge to pull up a bit. You'll want to tighten the claw screws in the trem cavity to pull it back down. You can pull it all the way down so the trem only lowers, or you can leave it floating so you can pull up and down. You'll also want to look at the nut slots if you go to a heavier gauge...they may been a little tight and you could get string binding which will really screw with your tuning stability. Answer: Thanks. It came flat. I will tighten the springs some, but still allow some float. It sounds like that is merely a user preference. Answer: Yeah, there's a lot of flexibility. I don't like to go too far past level on a strat bridge, but anywhere in the range you're talking about should work fine. Answer: THanks. Answer: What should I put in my hollowbody - P-90's or lipsticks (must be strat-sized)? OT: Dulling of senses through music.? 'ma strat.? It's dead around here?
