Showing my age: How do I listen to vinyl?
Question: I dig the aesthetics of vinyl. However I am not a home audio expert. I've used computers and CD players my whole life. How do I get that black thing spinning and how do I listen to it? Answer: Hold the disc horizontally with the hole over your little finger. Put a toothpick in your ear, and give the disc a spin. Tilt your head until the toothpick rides in the little grooves. Rock out until you drop. Answer: Hold the disc horizontally with the hole over your little finger. Put a toothpick in your ear, and give the disc a spin. Sounds like an organically based gramophone version of a Walkman. :thu: Answer: you will require that which used to be a common household item until around 1985...a turntable... Answer: Fuckin' Canadians. Answer: Exactly the answers I expected. I need a turnable, then what? Plug it directly into some speakers? Answer: Exactly the answers I expected. I need a turnable, then what? Plug it directly into some speakers? ummmm no, an amplifier would be the next phase of the audio circuit required...the nthe speakers. Answer: Exactly the answers I expected. Well, you gotsta admit it was a pretty stupid question. :) Answer: Exactly the answers I expected. I need a turnable, then what? Plug it directly into some speakers? You should be able to plug it into the soundcard on your PC and then use the external PC speakers. I used to do that when I was converting my vinyl over to CDs. Used an old 16bit SoundBlaster. Answer: ummmm no, an amplifier would be the next phase of the audio circuit required...the nthe speakers. See, this is the shit I don't know. Do they make decent turntables with builtin Amps or Speakers? Answer: See, this is the shit I don't know. Do they make decent turntables with builtin Amps or Speakers? Not really. Those were called "record players" and usually didn't sound very good. I had one of these when I was a kid; same color and everything. It's what I used to learn how to play guitar. Answer: There are some affordable turntables on the market that have a USB output and conventional analogue audio output. No idea about the quality. Answer: That Wildcat is too cool :thu: Answer: Here you go Mate, this is all you need:- Answer: Here you go Mate, this is all you need:- Well, that's helpful. Pffft. I had a Soundesign turntable/8-track/stereo system, and I was rockin' with my.... ....never mind. Answer: What did you do about the EQ? Terry D. When I ran the turntable through the Soundblaster I brought the analog waveforms into CoolEdit Pro and saved an entire side at a time. My #1 son (MSEE from Case-Western) set everything up for post processing and wrote some scripts to automate the steps. What was interesting is he reversed the entire waveform first before doing any EQ, noise filtering, etc, and then reversed it back. Claims it did a better job. He explained the theory behind it but at my age I sure as hell can't remember Fourier transforms and their ilk :D. I started converting ~1000 LPs to digital during the Pentium I days, IIRC. It took over 5 years, off and on  Help revamping an old guitarneed new pickups? finger use? Back From Daughters Home In Ontario And Tom Petty Concert?
