Uncompressed overdrive. do i need a boost instead?
Question: I have the TS-9 Overdrive sound covered. But, the compression and the mid-hump get me down sometimes. So, I'm looking for that overdrive that you get out of a slightly driven Vox AC15 or a Deluxe Reverb. Sparkly, open, airy. Do I get that out of a boutique-y overdrive? Or out of a boost pedal? This is going into a tube amp. Too many variations to specify each one, but think classic Fender, Vox, and Plexi-ish type amps (nothing hi gain). Got use this eBay coupon before June 15, so let's roll, people! Answer: I just got the Boss Deluxe Reverb pedal and it's alright. Give it a try. Answer: Answer: The womanizer looks cool. but $300 cool? Answer: they say the subdecay liquid sunshine isn't compressed. Answer: That looks...expensive. ;) Answer: I was under the impression that any time you overdrive or boost the input of an amp, the sound will compress :idk: Answer: I was under the impression that any time you overdrive or boost the input of an amp, the sound will compress :idk: I agree. Also I am wonder what amp tube amp the OP is using. They didn't mention it unless I overlooked that. (IMO) VOX and Fender have a very distinct sound so.... Answer: I was under the impression that any time you overdrive or boost the input of an amp, the sound will compress :idk: agreed. The only way I know of to get an uncompressed OD is o turn the gain down to where there's just a hair of breakup. other than that, i dont know. Answer: I ran one of these out of fender blues JR and it sounded great. Answer: 1 Attachment(s) I ran one of these out of fender blues JR and it sounded great. I have a variation of that pedal...the DOD FX50. It's worth having around (imo). They go pretty cheap. I got my recent one for $10 plus ship off ebay..about $15 total...snagged it with a BIN. Answer: Barber Small Fry. I love that little fucker running into my 68 Bassman. Answer: Barber Small Fry. I love that little fucker running into my 68 Bassman. :cop:Barber makes some cool pedals. Answer: Indeed. Barber makes some cool pedals! :) As to the initial question. I'm looking for something like that myself. An interesting thing i heard of late: A vintage fuzz type pedal, with the gain rolled back and the guitar volume rolled back tends to give a less compressed OD. Answer: I agree. Also I am wonder what amp tube amp the OP is using. They didn't mention it unless I overlooked that. (IMO) VOX and Fender have a very distinct sound so.... I've got all sorts of tube amps. Fender, Vox, Marshall. What I'm looking for is a pedal that will allow me to run each of these amps clean if I want to (yes, I get great tube OD with all of them, but at loud volumes), but get some mild OD with a pedal. I have tried a TS9 and a Bad Monkey and they both sound good, but compressed and mid-humpy. I want a drive that sounds natural and sparkly. I've heard that the Barber, Fulltone and maybe the liquid sunshine will do the trick. but i was wondering if a good boost might do the trick instead of an OD pedal. mostly because I"ve never used a boost pedal, so I don't know what it does. :idk: Answer: Yeah the TS9 and BadMonkey are going to have a mid hump and compress the sound, that's what they're supposed to do and it has its place. Unfortunately a lot of overdrives are based on that same old TS circuit, and naturally, overdrive is going to bring a bit of compression. But there are more transparent ODs out there. A Fulltone OCD has a flat EQ and is very dynamic (thus not compressed), at lower gain settings it will definitely do what you want. I haven't played one, but I think the Barber LTD Silver would fit your needs based on what I've heard, same with the AnalogMan KOT. The Klon while uber-expensive is also supposed to do a transparent boost/light grit. There's a bunch out there I've ommitted, most of them are in that "low boutique" $100-200 range. A straight up booster is simply going to ramp up your output going into the amp, so you're going to get dirt through more volume - probably not what you want here. Most good ODs like those mentioned above will be able to add a lot of volume boost to your signal in addition to some preamp clipping so I think that's the better bet. Hunt around the FX forums here and at TGP to get some ideas, plenty of threads about the flat-EQ/uncompressed overdrive. Answer: The Barber Small Fry has a knob to dial in compression along with the traditional eq,volume and dirt. I find it to be an amazingly versatile pedal with great tones in it. Answer: Boss Od-3. very open sounding OD. good boost as well. The demo in my youtube account is done with my Ac15 so check that out. And plus its only like 50 bucks. Cant go wrong.
