Guitar Woes...Plus some Music
Question: There have been a few threads about fixing cracking bridges, so I thought I would mention this. So I take my Penco along for my lesson yesterday and show my teacher/luthier the bridge...it has a widening crack from pin to pin. He didn't seem too concerned because of the way it still sounds. He suggested I continue to play it until it gets worse...He also said, he wouldn't just replace the bridge, but thinking about filling the crack first...and seeing what happens. I assumed he would just replace the bridge, because in discussion about it, thats what he said I should do....but after seeing it, changed his mind. But he did say he would tweek my hand-made bone saddle...I think thats a nice way of saying, my handywork wasn't that great. Anyway, when I get around to it (based on his repair schedule) I will have pics showing the process...probably this fall. Answer: I have seen several acoustics with identical cracks on the bridge. One friend played his for many years without having it repaired (an old Guild). Not sure that it is of urgent concern. Answer: Yeah, that was Ed's opinion too...and he's one of those honest guys. By the way, after my lesson we went over to O'briens Pub and jammed a little with Ed, Damon Fowler and a not soo famous blues sax guy (named Willie, Bridges...about 70) that used to play in Nor-lins and Chicago....a blast...here's a tune I recorded with the H4 placed on a table in front of the band....Oh and listen to some of the guitar licks....sweet. PS...as a reminder anyone who is in Chicago this coming weekend for the Blues fest should check out Damon...you will love his slide work. Answer: Excellent Jam. Would love to sit in on that!
