Except for the hum/noise, any reason singlecoils aren't used with distortion?
Question: Almost everyone in metal seems to play humbucker-equipped guitars. With the recent availability of noiseless singlecoils (Fender CSN et al), I'm wondering if that'll change - or is it because the meatier tone from humbuckers simply suits heavy saturation better? I tend to think this, but I'm not quite sure why it's that way. Answer: With that much gain, singles may actually be too noisy to be used reliably. I play single coils and they are usually pretty quiet, but I don't play with alot of gain either, usually just blues crunch to a smidge heavier. Answer: Almost everyone in metal seems to play humbucker-equipped guitars. This guy might provide a qualified, dissenting opinion... Answer: I've used single coils with overdrive and distortion for years. With higher gain settings though you really have to have a noise gate. They definately don't have the punch of a humbucker, but don't sound bad at all. Answer: I wonder if Ritchie Blackmore was ever told that you use can't distortion with single coils? Answer: single coils are srsly too weak to use with distortion they're not even strong enough to overdrive a pedal Answer: single coils are srsly too weak to use with distortion they're not even strong enough to overdrive a pedal  good one! Answer: single coils are srsly too weak to use with distortion they're not even strong enough to overdrive a pedal  I hope that was a joke. Answer: I thought Yngwie had SC sized humbuckers in his strat? Going by his signature pickup, anyway :idk: Mostly its just easier to get a good metal tone with humbuckers as they generally have more output and more bass/mids. The lack of noise is certainly a plus, as a Recto with the gain cranked would hum rather alot with single coils. Answer: This guy might provide a qualified, dissenting opinion... Mr. Malmsteen uses stacked humbuckers, not true single coils. Answer: I wonder if Ritchie Blackmore was ever told that you use can't distortion with single coils? He uses a pretty clean signal actually. Answer: Wow. A lot of teh metalz kids posting here.......... Answer: Wow Ultrahighgain, I haven't seen you on here in forever. Answer: single coils are srsly too weak to use with distortion they're not even strong enough to overdrive a pedal excellent! :thu: Answer: You want to amplify the quieter signal from the guitar using a pedal to overdrive the amp, not overdrive the pedal with the guitar. Answer: Because Jimi Hendrix always played clean. Answer: Yeah humbuckers push amps into overdrive and distortion much easier. And the extra bass doesn't hurt either. Answer: Because Jimi Hendrix always played clean. +1:thu: Answer: Well, technically everyone uses single coils for high gain... TWO of them, as a matter of fact. :poke: Answer: Because two coils are one louder: DO you even know how to rock out? It is spreading? Crate Blue Voodoo 4x12 for $130? What rack preamp could get me this sound (ASS KICKING THRASH content :rawk:)? New SX LP JR at Rondo? Popped for a Plek (long post)? Petition to make gunsblades edit his sig :cop:?
