Anyone Tried The Seymour Duncan Alternative 8 SH-15 Pickup Yet?
Question: Just seen this humbucker on SD's site, is it new or been out for a while, anyone try it yet? Answer: Saturday bump Answer: I'm very curious about this one too...Alnico 8... Answer: Not available yet. Answer: Yeah... is this the one that came out like 3 days ago or something? Answer: I think these will roll out in a month or so.Historically Spring seems to be when Winter Namm goodies get released for the most part. Answer: That pickup has been available for order since Jan of 2008!! I got one of ten first prototypes August of 2007. Yes i know someone at Duncan. anyways yeah its fairly new and i am surprised that more people havent tried them!! These things are great. I have an Alt 8 in the bridge and a pearly gates in the neck and let me tell you man, That alt 8 sounds great no matter what style you play. it's all around sound is very warm and doesnt get mushy or muddy. I use it in drop D tuning sometimes and it stay's clear and articulate!! Answer: That pickup has been available for order since Jan of 2008!! I got one of ten first prototypes August of 2007. Yea, I have a newer Epiphone les paul custom w/gold hardware and stock pickups and an old Charvel neck thru soloist body style with an Org. Floyd Rose and an EMG-85 in the bridge and a EMG-SA in the neck position that is slanted. I think I'm going to stick to passive, my Charvel is the only guitar of mine that is active, still don't know what kind of wood the body is a lot of people have told me it's probably Poplar but yea I've been thinking of getting an SD alternative 8 trembucker spaced for the bridge of my Charvel and maybe a SD humbucking single coil for the slant neck position and then a regular spaced SD alternative 8 for the bridge and a SD jazz for the neck position on my Epiphone les paul custom. It would be nice if SD did like what Dimarzio did with putting a humbucker in a p-90 size housing like their DP-290 p-90 super distortion, I have a Gibson les paul special with p-90's that I would like to replace the bridge pickup, sounds too thin compared to all my other guitars with humbuckers. Rich warlock NT for a while. Out of the SD neck pickups that I've heard, the ones that stood out were the Alnico II and Pearly Gates. I really dislike the Jazz & '59... Perhaps it's the sound of the Alnico 5 magnets... I was concerned though that SD recommends both for ebony fingerboards as my guitars are rosewood... I had also been toying with the idea of either going with a tried & true Duncan Distortion or trying the Alternative 8... How well does the Alt 8 play with the Pearly Gates? How does the Alt 8 compare to the Duncan Distortion? Answer: I have a SD Alternative 8 and a SD Distortion SH6n that I'm going to put into a Gibson Les Paul Studio. I'll let you know how it sounds. FP Answer: I have a SD Alternative 8 and a SD Distortion SH6n that I'm going to put into a Gibson Les Paul Studio. I'll let you know how it sounds. FP Excellent... A side by side review is definitely in order between those two pups! Answer: These things are great. I bought, then sold an Alt 8 Pup. Prior to that I also had an A8 modded Full Shred Pup. Basic description of the Alt 8 that seems to have been confirmed over at the Seymour Duncan forum: Big Output = ceramic Big bottom end...but not loose. Big low-mids... Present mids... Rounded highs...not soft or missing, just not "Bite-ee" More open than compressed... But the A8 magnet has this midrange thing going that I found to be very grating. I didn't care for either A8 PuP I had. The mid range sounds very angry...almost like its "yelling at ya"...which at first is very "yes!!!" But after a while I found it too raw...too one dimensional. Both the Full Shred and PATB-3 are more articulate than the Alt 8. The Alt 8 sounds more modern than the Distortion. I can't even imagine an Alt 8 guitar into a Recto... HTH... YMMV... Answer: The only thing I really know about Alnico 8 magnet pups are that josh homme and jesse hughes have them in their Maton Mastersound BB1200. both are pretty well known for that harsh kind of grinding sound.
