Test Tube Goats: Custom Order Trigger Squeeze

Question:
Last Friday I placed an order for a custom Martin.
For some time I've had this nagging GAS for a 14-fret hog 000 with a rose board and a 1-11/16" nut. Zero luck finding anything. On paper, the 000-18 is perfect, but I've crossed paths with a few and didn't care much for what came out of 'em - I have long suspected the combo of short scale and non-scalloped braces as the primary dud factor.
A couple o' years ago, I placed an order for a 000-28H but had to cancel due to unforeseen... stuff. I was browsing that model again recently and thought, "Wouldn't that be nice in hog..." So I started inquiring with Elderly about certain modifications... and quickly realized I was really making a modified '18 rather than a modified '28. Anyhoo, the deposit done been paid.
And now I hold my breath for six months or so, imagining I can hear the goats at play far, far off in the distance...

Answer:
Not sure what all those numbers mean exactly, except for the '6' months. Having just gone through a 7-month wait myself, I have to say that it wasn't so bad. I was able to get pictures of the build in progress, which helped tremendously.
Congrats, and I hope you get an early Thanksgiving present...

Answer:
You don't mess around. :thu:
I wish you were going to the McJam in August.......:poke:

Answer:
That sounds exciting Knockwood! I hope it sounds as good as you anticipate.
What's the McJam?

What's the McJam? Tim and Mary McKnight is having a 2 day jam / get together in August.
Knockwood was planning to attend, but his schedule would not allow it.

Answer:
It's great that you can get exactly the guitar that you want. I will stay tuned.

Answer:
Wow Knock! Quit making me jealous! I think that you will like what comes out of that git, should sound really nice.

Answer:
Cool! Hope the six months go by fast enough.

May as well semi-hijack the thread and make my own anouncement too...
=!tada!= I also custom ordered a Martin, about a month ago =!tada!=
I wanted a Martin OM with mahogany back and sides, ebony board and bridge, and low profile neck. Martin does'nt make anything like that in the "reasonable" price range (heck, they just don't make a standard series hog OM, period) the closest thing being the OM-18V which would have to be custom ordered with the low profile neck- a little more than I want to spend. So I started with an OM-21 (about $500 less than the OM-18V and has the same basic construction, i.e. dovetail; 1/4" scallops; sitka top; all the important stuff) and made a few changes.
I press the post button reluctantly...

For some reason I thought you were gonna keep it under your hat. Thought about it, but I'm not an under the hat kind of guy. I'm a freakin' yenta. :blah:
You and your fancy-schmancy ebony!
I needed a rosewood board. Don't know why. I think the D-1 I had for a while got me hooked. Your custom git sounds pretty hot, though. When they both come in, we'll need to saddle up a couple of Standard Poodles.

Answer:
This thread is making me want a custom guitar. :arg: ;)
I wanted a Martin OM with mahogany back and sides, ebony board and bridge, and low profile neck. Yikes! You too? I think I like your's better than Knock's though. Ebony has been more and more appealing to me lately. I might even go so far as to like Micarta. I much prefer the look of rose, though.
P.S. As long as I've got your attention, you should be getting a package from Illinois any day now. :thu:

Jeez, did you guys hit the lottery or something?

:D
Jeez, did you guys hit the lottery or something? The thing is, you only need to put down a 50% [non-refundable] deposit when you put the git in work. To cover the other half when it's done, I've just made a deal with a nice Nigerian man who recently lost a very wealthy uncle...
Seriously, though? I shoeboxed it. Literally... cash in a shoebox (with a hole in it, I swear to God) now and then over several months. Sometimes a buck or two, never more than $20 at a shot. And change... Really. And then there was the stimulus check, which stimulated me to do something halfway impulsive... And ultimately, the price was absolutely nowhere near as high as I was afraid it would be. I was shocked in a good way.
Does my wife know about this? Um...
You don't mess around. :thu:
I wish you were going to the McJam in August.......:poke: That thing sounds so freaking awesome. Wish I could make it. There is definitely no way I can pull it off, though.

Answer:
Way to go, Knockwood! :thu:
May the 6 months pass quickly and the git be everything you want it to be. I'll stay tuned.

Looks like this pc might blow up in a minute so I better post quick....
Kwak, my rent is darn cheap right now. Re-cooping from the D-18V is'nt taking as long as I thought. Tax money helped. Thing is, I pulled the trigger on the custom long before I happened across the D-18V...I gotta watch out for that kinda stuff. Avoid guitar shops when I've got money, and they've got fantastic gits like that. (darn thing is a blast, btw)
Yenta...we need more yentas in the world, I tell ya'. Don't know why but for some reason it did'nt cross my mind to post it. I'm gonna need to find a way to post some pics when this thing comes in.
One angle on the custom git thing is: If it turns out sounding like a cigar box, I can sell in on ebay and get most of my clams back, I figure. A couple hundred lost would be worth the learning experience.

Answer:
Dangerous, dangerous. I have played literally every guitar that I wanted to under 2 grand. Nothing really shook my pants off (cept my OM-21 and an OM-03r) i was thinking about a custom about a year back. Glad that you guys had the courage, I can't wait to see them on E-bay!

Whale, thanks!
