Video: how to play Crazy as a Loon (John Prine)
Question: John Prine is a musical hero of mine. I place him as high as Johnny Cash, the Hoss, Willie, Townes Van Zant, JJ Cale and all those guys when it comes to song writing. I discovered him a long time ago via Austin City Limits when I still lived in Europe. How Britney Spears is a superstar, and John Prine is awful close to unknown in his own country is beyond me. Not unlike the afore-mentioned JJ Cale, many people know his songs - they just don't know he wrote it. I had a guy tell me that he liked "that Bonnie Raitt song" when I played Angel from Montgomery at an open mic night recently. Nothing against Bonnie, but come on :) Anyway, I digress... I recorded a video this afternoon on how to play Crazy as a Loon. I love that song - always have. It's witty, funny, and totally in character for Prine. It's a perfect example of his song writing all wrapped up into one song. I play it first all the way through, then discuss the chords and the finger picking. Answer: i'm with you all the way on that..saw him first about twenty years or more ago on a tv show with nancy griffiths...for a 16 yr old lad into rock music the effect that had on me was startling, never get tired of listening to him. nice vid:thu: Answer: Good one to practice your Travis picking. Nice job! Answer: Thanks Tom. I love your quotes, btw ;) Answer: I couldn't agree w/you more regarding John Prine's talent. He is a great singer/song writer. I've always loved "Illegal Smile" but new he was special when I heard "Hello In There" and "Sam Stone". Was fortunate enough to grow up in the Chicago area and saw him numerous times at local venues. Saw him and Steve Goodman together once at Park West (I think). Great great show. I hope that he gets out here in the Phoenix area soon. Would love to see him again. Sorry for going on, great video that you did. Answer: Thanks. I am glad you "went on" about John Prine. All positive info/experiences/memories are always welcome! Some of the vids I make, I know that the artist is already famous as all heck and needs my exposure like a hole in the head ;) In the case of John Prine, I am definitely trying to bring him some more exposure. Somehow, he seems to be forgotten in the mix, as it were, and it's a damn shame! I recall hearing him say that "Hello in there" was his favorite song that he'd written. It sure is a beautiful tune. This is my third Prine video... I don't know which one I'll do next. Sam Stone remains my favorite song of his... not that I have ever come across one of his songs that I didn't love. Answer: Now that the Cubs game is over, I think I'll drop Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings in the CD. I've always loved "Lake Marie". We used to go to the Twin Lakes when I was a kid, and I still own a home in Delavan not to far away. Life is good!!! Answer: Yes brother, life is indeed good, even for Cubbies fans ;) Answer: :thu::cool: Good vid BHH! Answer: Thanks bud, I appreciate it :) Answer: you'll need real player to view this but it's a treat for Prine fans....if you haven't already seen it. Answer: John Prine content is as good a reason to install that terrible software as there is... I'll do that later on. Thanks for the link :) Answer: 'When I was a child, my family would travel, to western Kentucky, Where my parents were born..................." John Prines's 'Paradise' was one of the song's I often would do at the local open mikes, accompanying myself on my 12 string a/e. It's a great song, and pretty hard to not tap a foot to. I only did two songs at open mikes that were vocals, Prine's 'Paradise', and Dylan's 'The Times They Are a Changin'. I saw him perform in the ealy 90's at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis. 'Take the star out of the window', 'Robert was a sailor', and 'Souvenirs' are also a few of my Prine favourites. He's a musical national treasure. Answer: Thanks for sharing, John. I am loving all these personal recollections of his great music :) Answer: Tuesday AM Bump :) Answer: Last bump-o-th'-day for Prine...quarter to midnight 'mountain'. "She said 'Johnny'! wontcha get me some popcorn?'.....and she knew..I had to go pretty far....as soon as I passed throught the moonlight...she jumped into a foreign sportscar". Goodnight John Prine....where-ever you are! Answer: Aren't his lyrics the best? He can go from flat out romanticism to social satire to good old fashioned crack you up stuff. The guy's a genius. Answer: Well, I am a pretty lucky guy. I got home today, and my wife announced that she bought us ticket for John Prine's show here in town, coming up in September. Yeah, it's a long way away. It's gonna be hard to wait :) Answer: Cool:thu: Answer: Yeah, I am pumped. He's got great humor on stage, too, which is definitely a side of him that's well worth the ticket price on its own - though don't get me wrong, I am going for the tunes ;) Boring movie .? NGD?
