Note definition from pickups or bridge?

Question:
I just bought a 1980s something Squire for cheap with stock pickups.
The note definition is terrible and the tone is alright but I'm not a fan of most fender pickups.
Can anyone tell me what the chances are that I'll get way better articulation and note separation from some new pups? Or could it be the bridge?
Don't want to sink money into this if it's the guitar thats the issue.
I'm thinking tonerider p-90s and maybe a tremking bridge because the neck is fast and comfortable. Any help is appreciated.

Answer:
They both can contribute, but I'd say pickup first then hardware.

Answer:
Pickups can make a huge difference to improve articulation, but picking the right ones can be tricky. I think my success rate is only about 50/50 with my pup mods, but hopefully it will be getting better as I learn from my mistakes. The wood on a guitar can definitely hold back the benefit of certain pickups, but you can usually find a match of wood and pickups that will work well to improve the tone.

Answer:
It's amazing what a nice set of pickups can do for note definition.
