How do you figure the value of Re-finished Vintage electrics?

Question:
There must be a mathmatic ratio to figure the actual value? Say a VintageTelehas a value of $10K. But another same model year etc etc, has a Re-Finished body[Nitro] and Re-Frett[Stainless-Steel m-js]. Couple extra screw holes, say the Tuning Machines went from Stock to Aftermarket[Waverly]then back to the Original Stock T.M.s?
But otherwise the guitar is all there as far as parts 100% Orig. Great, Playing and Sounding piece.
So OK there's the hypathetical guitar. Now if that Tele was fetching $10K from other piece's you have seen Sold in the [past month]. With NO-ISSUE'S
So what you do? Take 50% off or 25%?
Interesting to know how much the tele would depreciate with just a couple cosmedic changes? The playing and sounding would all still be Original with the exact electronics?

Answer:
how much the tele would depreciate with just a couple cosmedic changes? but that's what collectors look for.
how it sounds is none of their concern, I seriously doubt that many 'vintage' guitars fetching this kind of money will be played anyway.

Answer:
Hmmm I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure the value would drop dramatically, as in more like 50%. It also depends on when it was refinished; back in the 60's or 5 years ago, etc

Answer:
I don't know about that. many Pro Players look for exactly that. Collectors I agree.

Ya thats what I was wondering. I realize much depends on exacty whats been done and how it was done, and the quality of materials used, like a original period correct Nitro.

Interesting to know how much the tele would depreciate with just a couple cosmetic changes? The playing and sounding would all still be Original with the exact electronics? Moded vintage is def' a players game. You want the most if selling and the least if buying. Basically you start at mint/ original and work your way down. It def' gets hazy from there.(imo) It really all comes down to how far the buyer wants to go price wise from stock wise..so to speak. You really can't (imo) set a real % based off of what has been changed...though there are some big change no brainers....pups and electronics for example.
Then the deal....a vintage screamer...has all the scream and is vintage but is blown out collectibility wise....what do you do?

Answer:
many Pro Players look for exactly that. heh.
a few pro players I know have gone Fender Custom Shop instead of 'vintage' hunting and are very happy with it:
1) you can specify what you want
2) in case of theft you can get the exact same guitar again
3) workmanship is generally much better
and
4) the prices are (more) reasonable

Answer:
Depends on the guitar but if it's a real collectable, like a 50's LP? More like 75% and thats is the refinish is first class. Vintage factory refins that are provable and worth a minus 50% depending on the guitar. Factory refinished vintage Fenders are not so bad because tthe factory commonly refinished Strats for a long time but the in general market wants original finishes.
OTOH, there are a couple of guys who do stunning refinishes and restos on old (And new!!) LP's that'll actually increase the value of some instruments. It all depends and it's all expensive.
If you were about to drop $15000.00 on a vintage late 50's Fender or $25,000.00 on a Gibson, you'd be a fool to spend your cash on a refinished axe!

:cop:We live in good times though don't we. What can I say. Lots of the stuff coming out today is pretty killer and consistent (imo). Especially gig wise. If anything you can rent top-shelf stuff for the studio and or depending your level in the food chain, people are throwing vintage gear at you to borrow/ use for that recording session.

Answer:
The guitar I have in mind is a 67 Tele and its NICE. ALL Orig exept the Finish and Re-Frett. The price is $2500. Electronics are all orig and it sounds good.
BTW I play guitar. I'm not really concerned with collecting. My goal is great playing, sounding and feeling guitars. For the price of this one I might as well buy it. A good CS Tele is gonna cost me that?

Answer:
thats a good price anyway really isnt it.

Answer:
Ya I believe so. Few other small issues though. Tuners where changed to Waverlys then changed back to the originals. String Tree was removed and lost so a newer was added. Little shit like that. But still its basically all there.
I need it like I need a hole in the head. But I know the guy and it is a good deal.

hell, if it feels and sounds right, who cares what was done to it or when it was built? :)

heh.

Getting back to the value of refinished vintage guitars Fenders would be about 50% but if there are other issues like refrets and rewound pickups the reduction in value would be more like 60% but with Gibsons it's dependent on the model and the quality of the refinish, for example Les Paul Standards the refinish might only reduce the value by 20% but a Special would be something like 40% but you never can tell.
