Possibly Silly tone question
Question: I have been for about a year playing a PRS Custom 22 with dragon 2 pickups. I have centered my sound around this guitar. Recently I picked up a 1990 Greco LP and put a gibosn 496 and 500t pickups in it. I know that these are " hot" pickups, but I didn't realize they would be this hot. It takes all of my clean signal out of my Vox ac30cc1 and pushes the front end of my amp into overdrive. However, when I switch guitars, to my PRS, my signal is changed back. Is there any way of taming it aside from changing the pickups? Any pickup suggestions? Mike Answer: volume knob volume pedal clean boost with the volume knob down equalizer with the volume slider down that kinda thing. Answer: You could also mess with the pup height a bit though they will still be pretty hot. Answer: I would just keep the pickups and turn the volume knobs down on the guitar. Those pickups will clean up. Who knows, maybe you will make use of having hotter pickups. That's what I do with my 7-string with Dimarzio Evolution and Tone Zone pickups. Those are hot pickups compared to the pickups in my other guitars. Answer: Do you use the volume on your guitar to try and tame it? If not you might want to try that. You may want to do the treble bleed mod to prevent the signal from sending highs to ground and mudding up your sound as you roll the volume down. Answer: my interest is peaked by that treble bleed mod. where would I find that at? I was looking at some of the kits through rs electronics, ie...the treble tamer kit. I'm not sure if that's what I'm looking for as far as sound goes. no I haven't tried cleaning it up with volume knob because of the clarity/definition that I am accustomed to. Answer: Place a capacitor from the hot lug to the middle lug on your volume pot. The lower the value the higher the frequencies that are going to the guitars output rather than ground. I use a .001pf cap on all my humbucker guitars, that prevents any of the highs from going to ground rather than the guitar's output. You can experiment with different values to what suits you best. I use a pair alligator clip leads to test different values. I think Fender uses .022 and Gibson uses .047pf caps on a lot of their stock configs. Answer: Forgot to mention that some people run a resistor in parallel with the cap. I think that is supposed to help smooth the taper when adjusting your volume. I never tried this myself, I just can never remember to get resistors when I go to Radio Shack. Answer: Any particular value resistor? 1meg? Answer: Try a search on this forum for "treble bleed resistor" there should be a thread around here where somebody mentions which value to use. I don't know it off the top of my head.
