Picking Technique
Question: Hi guys. I was reading the letters section in a guitar magazine and someone had wrote in saying that their pick spins round in between their fingers as they play, and they wanted to know why this was happening. They were told that they were probably holding the pick so that it hits the strings at an angle and that was causing the pick to rotate. Now, I've noticed that I do the same thing. So i was wondering are there any good exercises or routines that I can use to try and get around this problem? Answer: How do you hold your pick? Answer: Between my thumb and index finger. The index finger is bent round so that the side of my thumb and the nail part of my index finger are parallel, and the pick sticks out between them, if you get what I mean. Answer: That's a good method. I'd try some different picks. I use Dunlop Big Stubby's which (for me) don't spin. If you have a guitar store near you go down and buy a few different styles and see if it helps. Answer: Hadn't thought about changing the type of pick. I use Dunlop Gator Grips at the moment but maybe a different type would have an affect. Cheers for the advice. Answer: it happens to me if i strum real hard. a lighter touch or picks with rubber grips or grooves in the plastic would probably help you. Answer: Hi guys. Answer: ...this used to happen to me a lot, until I actually relaxed my grip, which sounds like it shouldn't work but it did!. I think too much tension is probably the reason for many technique problems.. I think too much tension is probably the reason for many technique problems.. I've heard this before and you right it does sound strange. I've tried relaxing my grip and when I focus on not gripping too hard the pick doesn't slip, so maybe I'm actually tensing up without realising as I play and this is causing the pick to slip. I think i'm going to experiment with some different picks and also try to concentrate on my grip, hopefully the right combination will have an effect. Cheers for the advice guys! Answer: On that note, try Claytons. The white acetal polymer ones. They have a subtle graininess to them and actually get grippy when wet. How much does it cost to sell a guitar on Ebay?
