What's your opinion on current production Marshalls?
Question: I tried the DSL/TSL extensively and I think they're decent but nothing more, I don't know exactly why, but they always sounded a little "weak" to me... Tried the Vintage Modern briefly and it didn't impressed me much, but I didn't have much time and the master was at about 2... And last but not least, I recently played the new Kerry King signature head and I must say it kicked some serious ass! ... So, what's your experience? Answer: insert barf smiley... not a fan at all... too many other amps that do way more and better... Answer: marshalls have always sounded weak at low volumes gotta turn em up its what they were originaly made for. so pete townsend could play stadiums. myself i love em, cant find anything else that provides a good o.d without going into mega money. only problem ive ever had with em is getting a recording sound from a 100watt. theres just never enough air in the room for it to push so loud it sounds boomy and quiet it sounds weak, it can be difficult to find the sweet spot Answer: I agree fully - I'm sure the modern Marshalls sound great at full blast but they're particularly lifeless at normal gig volumes. It's like buying a Ferrari and only using it to drive to the shops and back once a fortnight. The plexis weren't much better, but at lower volumes they have really nice warm cleans (being based on the Fender bassman, it's understandable). For me an 18W Bluesbreaker combo would blow any of the current run to smithereens, but that's as much to do with the power tube saturation as anything else. Perhaps the problem is simply that Marshall don't make low-powered amps any more... Et in Arcadia ego.? Just won a EJ strat on a ebay auction: Care and Maintenance for a nitro lacquer guita?
