The Ernie Ball MM Silhouettes have had this for about 15 years now.

The only Les Paul I have ever seen with quick change pups was a dealer sample model that came with a bunch of rear routed pickup modules. Is this what you were talking about?
Also, There was a local guy named Rick Dodge that tried to release guitars that had swappable pup pods with different wiring and switching. It didn't fly despite the quality. The man made excellent necks and guitars. But when it came down to it... there was a huge hole in the body where the electronics snapped in and out.

Answer:
I'm doing some Strat mod that will have quick change pickguards. I also have an Artcore that will have quick change pickups too. Not hot swappable or anything though.

Answer:
I'd like to think that modeling guitars will win the day someday in this regard. Right now, a variax can do a virtual swap on pickups, but they don't have it down to a complete selection of pickups, only on pickup type, such as single coil, hb, lipstick etc. You can also choose the pickup position and wireing (in phase, out of phase etc).
Someday . . .

Answer:
Ive often thought about quick release pups and even a quick release wiring harnesses that have different pots, caps, etc, to gain access to an entirely different model guitar. Sort of like a body and neck with fully, "quick realese" interchangeable part. Of course this would only benefit the consumer and screw guitar manufactureres out of gouging us for some RI or something, model, at umpteen hundred dollars more.

Answer:
Dan Armstrong did this decades ago on his plexi-guitars and they're are doing it on the re-issues as well.

Answer:
Any time you have something that plugs in vs hard solder it introduces dirt and corosion to get in the connector. I'm not a fan of the EMGs either. I've done repair replacements more than once. I believe its either because theyre powerd and get an intermittant connection that blows them or the pickup can tilt a littel and crack the connection inside the epoxy which makes it worthless. As far as tone goes. I'd much rather just pick up another guitar with a different tone, Tuned up, and ready to go. You also have the benifit of a different neck that aids in relaxing the hands when they get cramped up after hours of playing, and audience visual appeal of Seeing something different as well.

gibson has 1 as a guitar of the month or sometin like that ,not much wood left in that pic,the first of anything is always big & sloppy ,then it gets smaller & refined like everything else, surprised we arent at that point now

Answer:
I'm doing some Strat mod that will have quick change pickguards. I've been thinking about doing this, but haven't come up with a better solution than Velcro for repeatedly reattaching the pickguard. What's your plan? Snaps?

Answer:
The Armstrong's can do that too, I think.

Answer:
Biggest complaint I've seen about the Gibson is that it uses magnets to secure the pickups. Another magnetic field to interfere with the pickups and to add to string pull supposedly.
I think that it is a great idea and it shouldn't be that damn hard to do really.
If I was doing a strat type I would look for something that would slide into a hinge type deal on one side to secure it (think computer case side panel) and then one or two of those types of connectors where the center pin flares an outer sleeve to fasten it down. I don't know how to explain it or where I've seen it before but I've seen them. Only problem is that you are still going to have to get around the strings somehow so it won't be something you would do between sets.
