Mahogany with a maple cap would be the traditional combo for a LP type tone. Korina (limba) wood is also a good match, like gibson V's and Explorers had.
Swamp Ash is extremely resonant and would be a good match.

so far I heard and played the JB in mahogany, swamp ash (both with maple tops) and basswood bodies.
necks were mahogany, maple and (my fav) ovangkol.
no complaints whatsoever...

Yeah, the JB needs warm and the '59 needs a touch of bright. The '59 did not work well in my all mahogany Yamaha SBG700S. Too muddy.
It's going to eventually be replaced with a 496 since I had great success with tossing the bridge PG and replacing it with a 500T

Mahogany is the main resonant tone from a LP, but the maple top adds some midrange and treble crispness. If the guitar is to be all mahogany with no cap, then you probably want a bright tonewood for the fingerboard like ebony.
Check the Suhr and Warmoth websites for some descriptions of what various woods sound like.
It might also be possible to use the JB in the neck, and the 59 at the bridge to get a more even balance.

Speaking of Basswood, does anyone have a clip of the JB in the bridge of a basswood guitar? Been thinking of putting one in my Showmaster, it's basswood body with maple set neck with rosewood board.

I would imagine JBs work best with basswood or all mahogany. Other types of wood, you're risking it being too bright.
59's would probably work best with mahogany + maple cap.
