Any way of getting stereo sound from a mono amp?
Question: I'm looking into saving up for a new amp and have been considering some mono options. Is there any way of getting use out of stereo effects with a mono amp? The obvious is to have two amps running but I can't afford that nor do I want to. I'm working my way into an all stereo system but it annoys me that I have to rule out some truly great amps. Answer: Maybe you could run a very short delay. It will thicken the sound up. Other than that, not really.... There are some stereo amps. Line 6 Duotone (and Vettas etc), One of the Gibson Goldtone combos is 30W stereo Answer: no, you have to have 2 paths Answer: You could use the pre-amp of the main amp and it's power amp, but run stereo FX in the loop with the second output going to a second power amp and speakers. One pre-amp sound, but stereo FX. If you have a stereo cab (like a Marshall 1960) you could get a wee rack power amp and stereo FX unit. Would be relatively compact. Ish. Answer: Damn! I was hoping there was some kind of pedal or something that would force a mono signal into two paths and make a stereo config. Yeah, I guess the stereo part would have to come from the power section and thats the main part of any amp that can't really be changed without some serious mods. Well, at least that narrows down my options and I can forget about my Fuchs Viper question. Answer: Band mate runs stereo in another group. He uses his JVM and a small Triumph amp. Runs most of the effects through the Peavey and less through the JVM. Keeps the JVM up front but gives stereo options. Sounds good for the style they play. Answer: I sure love being in stereo on stage, but it does seem like maybe 1 out of 20 soundguys bothered taking advantage of it. Most of the time going through the trouble of multi-amp or stereo rigs is wasted on the soundguy and if not him...the audience. I've never used a stereo rig on stage but I can imagine that would be the case. Unfortunately for me though, I'll know the difference and it somehow seems to add that extra something to the overall ambiance of a psychedelic cult metal band -- that I hope to start some day ;). All I know is that when you get some distance between speakers and get that dynamic swirling quality there's nothing like it. Even though the audience doesn't realize why it sounds good I'll bet that if you did a blind test of stereo vs non stereo the audience would say a show performed in stereo was better but couldn't tell you why. I guess the trick is convincing the sound guy that the stereo separation is part of the show and a necessary aspect of your over all sound.
