Its a phenomenon that happens in wood. Most often in maple. There are no "special" maple trees that grow quilted or flamed, or birdseye for that matter. It just happensm, so thats why its more expensive to get it, not too mention it looks cool. Its only appearance, they do not have different tonal properties.
