Mac Nerds: Recommend me a good external Hard Drive for Recording

Question:
I have scanned some threads in the mac ox forum here on this topic. :eek: imagine!
I need a HD for backup purposes but also for some recorindg purposes because it seems like an external HD is a great benefit to recording. (Remember, I'm a super-noob).
From what I can see the general advice is to go firewire and as fast as possible so you can avoid recording on your computer's internal HD.
Questions:
1. is 7800 fast enough for general multi-track recording?
2. I have a macbook pro (intel), can someone reco me a solid harddrive? Looking for something in the 200GB+ range. Probably don't want to spend more than 200 bucks, if possible.
Your personal experiences with a product would be much appreciated!
Thanks guys!

Answer:
WD MyBook works for me. I use them to record and live for sample playback and haven't had one crap out yet.

Should I have any concern about the Firewire 400 vs. 800 (which my machine supports)?
IN other words, is firewire 400 fast enough?

Answer:
Unless you're planning on recording 32 simultaneous tracks of 24/192 audio, fw400 should be plenty. :)

Thanks for the reco!

Answer:
No specific recommendations, but 7800 should definitely be fast enough.
FW800 is nice (especially as you plan on using it for more than recording), given the noticeable speed difference, the fact that it frees up a 400 port, etc., and I use it... but again, FW400 should definitely do the job.
I use the following, running Logic Studio, or GarageBand to do dirty jobs:
iMac -> Apogee Ensemble
MacBook Pro -> Apogee Duet

Cool. Cool.

I like the Lacie Quadra series - a 500gb drive should run you about $170 or so, and there is a 1TB version as well. These come with fw400, fw800, USB2, and eSATA connections, so they'll work with just about everything, and the cables come with the drive. FW800 should be more than sufficient, although you may want to consider picking up an eSATA card that will work with your ExpressCard slot on the MBP, especially if you ever want to work with some video.
I work for an Apple Pro Film and Video VAR, so I've been through this a few times... :)

Thanks for asking this...I am planning on getting a Macbook pro in a few months and this just answered a question for me!

Answer:
I bought one of these on the recommendation of some of the people on this board. It's really good, not that expensive, and it works with Mac.
Highly recommended. Also, I would say that you should get as many gigabytes as possible. I got the 320GB model and I'm already almost filling it up with movies, music, and recordings. Go 500+. I'm sure you can afford it.

Answer:
Sorry for the bump, but I thought that you should know.
Make sure that your hardrive has an oxford 911 chipset. It really helps to make recording as smooth as can be. It is the fastest chipset available and should smoke anything else on the market for speed, which is what you want for recording.
This is the one that I have for my powerbook. OWC is a great company, they throw in some freebees as well.
