Best Horror Movie Ever!

Question:
I just finished watching 'Wrong Turn' and i wasnt that impressed - then i started to wonder!? what horror films actually get you scared? what horror movies actually get your heart jumping!!?
i've not watched many horror flicks but i wanted to know which movie(s) i should look out for if i really wanted to side down with a 'loved' one and scare the '****' out of her?
any suggestions on movies?
Answer:

No movie has ever scared me. But a few videogames have. Silent Hill, for example, is a game I cannot play in the dark by myself.
I guess the only movies that have scared me are not horror movies exactly. They are movies with radical stuff that makes me scared about the state of the world. But as for blood and guts horror... nope, just not scary.
Answer:

if youve never seen halloween before, id recommend that, aslo The Eye, which has one of the creepiest scenes Ive ever seen (the elevator sequence)

*grins broadly*
The Exorcist
The Shining
Black Christmas
The Changeling
Answer:

Ringu is a must imo..
Blair Witch Project
Omen 1 & 2
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
What Lies Beneath is jumpy as anything if you crank the sound up

My favourites anyway, not to everyones taste.
Answer:

The EYE
I tell you what really scared me, the first half hour of Phantoms ... its a shame it went downhill from there.
Answer:

Ringu scared the bejesus out of me watching it alone at midnight.
When I subsequently watched it with a mate, I can't repeat what he shouted during a certain scene, but it was along the lines of "Holy Bleeping Bleep!"
Conventional modern 'Slasher' style horror has never scared me.
The only film apart from Ringu that I remember feeling decidedly uncomfortable watching was Blair Witch.
Oh, and the Shining, but I've not seen that in yonks.
Answer:

I guess, like you, I'm really not impressed by horror movies. All the recent teen slasher movies leave me completely cold. As do most of the old ones.
Haloween is OK but I would consider it scary, the same goes for Ringu although that is pretty well done. The Blair Witch project just annoyed the hell out of me and everything since is just plain boring.
The Omen series is pretty good, the Exorcist is good for it's time, but the only horror movie that ever actually scared me is The Entity.
Everything else pretty much blows, maybe I just have a sturdier disposition than the majority of todays cinema goers.
Answer:

'Dark Water''s great, and had my other half jumping out of the sofa. I also really liked 'My Little Eye', but not had a chance to test it on her yet (!).
'Ringu' is great though. That certain moment referred to above is probably one of the best, and cleverest, scenes in horror cinema.
Answer:

Isn't Dark Water by the same director as Ringu? I read a quick review in FHM and the gits left a major spoiler (I think) in.. Might check it out.
Answer:

Yeah, it is the same director.
Shame on you for reading FHM, and I hope the spoiler doesn't ruin it for you as it is a film that works best when you know absolutely nothing about the plot.
As I said, I enjoyed 'My Little Eye', but would have enjoyed it even more if there hadn't been a great big spoiler here on these ver forums without so much as a warning.

I think I read that spoiler too, can't remember it though.
Answer:

No mention of Mr Romero's work?
Dawn of the Dead
Martin
Night of the Living Dead
The latter still disturbs and chills me at the end...
Mind you zombies always scare me :)
Nothing else does ....
Answer:

My favourite horror film of all time is A Warning to the Curious, the BBC's 1972 "Ghost Story for Christmas", and it's the most beautifully constructed, effortlessly terrifying horror film I've ever seen. In short, an unsung classic.
Answer:

Don't know if everyone would class it as a horror film or not (I certainly do), but for scares check out David Lynch's 'Lost Highway'.
Answer:

John Carpenter's The Thing is the only film that has ever scared the poo out of me. But I was only 14 when I saw it first.
Answer:

The original Robert Wise classic The Haunting is pretty darn terrifying, which is even more incredible when, essentially, nothing horrifying is shown. It's just the most perfectly paced and constructed Haunted House movie, truly nerve-wracking - sound FX have never been more chilling. It goes without saying that you should avoid the recent CGI-doused big Hollywood remake like the clap!
Answer:

My votes would go for:
The Haunting (http://uk.imdb.com/Title?0057129) (1963)
The Innocents (http://uk.imdb.com/Title?0055018) (1961)
Les Diaboliques (http://uk.imdb.com/Title?0046911) (1955)
Narshty - agree with you about "A Warning to the Curious" :) It's my fave BFI disc so far!
Answer:

tips4tnt - Glad you think so. The more people who own this disc, the better!
Answer:

Narshty - I'm just about to order it; been meaning to for a long while but never got 'round to it. (And I really should be saving up for the BFI's Norman McLaren boxset!)
Answer:

Don't Look Now is the best for me, followed closely by Carrie and The Brood.
I'm also very fond of The Haunting, The Devil Rides Out, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Alien, The Wicker Man, Halloween, Suspiria, The House By The Cemetery, Just Before Dawn, Day of the Dead, Deliverance and Exorcist II The Heretic
Answer:

Exorcist and Carrie still creep me out.
Answer:

Don't Look Now and The Wicker Man must have been some scary double feature when they were first released. I think they work as horror because they mix the horror with the mundane for added shock value.
Answer:

The best and scariest movies I have ever seen were The Haunting (1963) and The Innocents (1961). Highlander 2 was scary too, but for other reasons ...
Answer:

The Klaus Kinski film Crawlspace scared the heck out of me, as did Suspiria.
Answer:

Another vote here for Ringu, my girlfriend nearly had a heart attack during that scene which kinda ruined the scariness for me as I nearly wet myself laughing at her reaction.
Answer:

Suspiria.
Answer:

You can't beat as good ghost story for a bit of the old spine tingle, so I will vote for The Innocents.
Narshty- I think I will go for A Warning to the curious. Have you seen Whistle and I'll come to you BFI release? that is a very good little ghost story, with a compelling performance by Michael Hordern.
also The Woman in Black and a few SYP moments.
Answer:

If you want something new and quite good, go for "The Others".
You must have a dark room, a good sound system turned UP and settle in your chair and press play.
No special effects, only about three sets but the way horror used to be done.
Answer:

Rosemary's Baby
Carnival Of Souls
Paper House

Excellent! Yes, I have all the BFI Archive Television releases, and they're all terrific. Whistle and I'll Come to You is immensely spine-chilling, but A Warning to the Curious tops them all. It's got the single scariest score I've ever heard in a film, and the film has the astonishing ability to be just as scary in the daylight as at nighttime (but save it for the latter, anyway!) Lawrence Gordon Clark deserves to be remembered as one of the genre's finest directors. I'd love to see his version of Casting the Runes (famously made earlier as Night of the Demon by Jacques Tourneur) made for ITV in the late 70s.
also The Woman in Black and a few SYP moments.
So I hear - if only someone would give it a decent DVD release!

I remember that and quite excellent it was too (all the better for not seeing the demon; the one in Night of The Demon - an otherwise superb film - is quite daft).
I still have an unwatched VHS tape of the original broadcast of The Woman in Black - but the fact that there's a missing two minute segement at a quite vital point (I was changing tapes!) - has put me off watching it...for quite some time!
BTW while I'm here; not the best horror movie, but for my money the best scene, and one that has had a decades long impression on me - the graveyard scene from Plague of The Zombies.
Scary.

So many films, so little time...

4 - Blair Witch Project - Just because, OK.
