Spirited Away and other Studio Ghibli films

Question:
My 3 year old sister has watched Spirited Away twice in as many days and loves it so I just want to know, having not seen any other Studio Ghibli films, whether people think she will like Castle In The Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service? Also are there any other films like these you can suggest.
Answer:

She will adore them all.
Don't forget My Neighbour Totoro.
Best bet for that is the HK R3 (Value wise...)

Is this available with an english dub as she isn't up to reading subs yet
Answer:

Um, there's a US release of it but it's 4:3 but I expect it has the dub on there. I have the Japanese R2 which is a US dub as well, but I dunno about the R3. The R2 Japanese is pretty costly, though.
There's a huge thread in the movie review forum on Miyazaki films if you have a looksee.

I know I shouldnt be saying this but if you want to get Totoro and dont want to pay for the japanese dvd (which is very costly) then just get the R1. Just make sure you don't pay a lot of money for the R1
Either way just make sure your little girl doesnt miss out on this film no matter what :)
EDIT - Just to note that you can get the R1 of Totoro for just under £9 including delivery from www.amazon.ca. If you can afford it then go for the jap dvd but if not this is your best option as it has the dub and the R3 doesn't
Answer:

I've been on a Studio Ghibli fest over the last couple of days.
Kiki's Delivery Service - Absolutely wonderful  draws you right in!
My Neighbour Totoro - I didn't enjoy this as much as i thought i would!!!!! When Totoro himself is on the screen it's fantastic but all the other times the film was dull and just annoyed me. Totoro and his friends gets surprisingly little screen time and the gaps between them are far too long.
One thing through, that girl can run like lightening and never seems to get tired!!
Spirited Away - I'm half way though this at the moment and I’m totally loving it, right up there with Kiki's Delivery Service.
I have yet to see Castle In The Sky
Answer:

Princess Monoko? I think its a Ghibli film. The animation was excellent, and the film itself wsa ok .. not brilliant but I did enjoy it.
Answer:

aye Mononoke was a Ghibli film.
I'm waiting for October the 11th with baited breath :)
Castle in the Sky and Kiki are getting their U.K. releases :D
Answer:

Princess Mononoke is a gorgeous film - but I don't think it would be suitable for someone so young. There are some sparse scenes of violence in there, and this might not be what you want her to watch (But definately get it for yourself - a bargain at CD-WOW;))
Answer:

I don't think any of the R3 Ghibli films I've got have an English dub, but they are all fantastic transfers at a great price :)
I'd say Kiki and Totoro are the most kiddie friendly.
I'd also highly recommend Panda Go Panda (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=151&story=1846) - it'll be weeks before you stop humming the theme tune :D

I actually have the R2 DVD with the book for a couple of years now. And yes it's also great, which make me not liking Totoro even more odd! I'm i the only one?
Answer:

Okay, the Ghibli filmography goes:
Hayao Miyazaki Ghibli Films
Nausicaa Of The Valley Of Wind
No DVD
Laputa: The Castle In The Sky
R1 Available from everywhere. Definately for kids!
My Neighbour Totoro
As said there is an R1 which is cropped, R2 which is expensive and an R3 which is dub-less.
Kiki's Delivery Service
Good R1 widely available. Another definate for children.
Porco Rosso
R3 available. R2 U.K release on 22 September
Princess Mononoke
Amazing film! Not for kids though. R1 best available. R2 is cheap but has no literal subtitles. Both versions have dubs.
Spirited Away
You own this one which makes me jealous. I still haven't seen it!!!
Isao Takahata Ghibli Films
Grave Of The Fireflies
2 Disc R1 Collector's Edition available. Not for kids again though :(
Only Yesterday
R3 Available. R2 U.K release on September 22nd
Pom Poko
18 August R2 U.K release
My Neighbours The Yamadas
Again available on R3
All of Takahata's films are very, very good but I wouldn't recommend any for children.
Other Ghibli Release
Ocean Waves
Whisper Of The Heart
The Cat Returns
Pre-Ghibli Work By Miyazaki and Takahata
Panda! Go Panda!
By Miyazaki & Takahata. Two short films both on the same R1 DVD. ESSENTIAL for kids!!!
Lupin III: The Catle Of Cagliostro
By Miyazaki. Kids would enjoy this but it may bore many of them. My little bro loves it. Dub contains swearing.
Chie The Brat
Unavailable
Gauche The Cellist
Kid's would love this too I'd imagine. Loads of cute animals. Funny too. Unfortunately unavailable though
Looking back over the list, not much of Ghibli's work is for children! I never noticed before.
I'd personally recommend Panda! Go Panda!, Laputa: The Castle In The Sky, My Neighbour Totoro & Kiki's Delivery Service for your daughter and Princess Mononoke for yourself!

In this part of the world (especially the UK and North America), all animation is perceived as being for children unless is goes in a totally different direction, filling every second with as much adult content as possible. It really makes me sad when I see adults always rushing to justify purchasing an animated film by saying "It's for the children, of course".
The biggest problem, I think, is that too many people perceive animation as a genre, and a children's genre at that. It's not a genre, it's a medium, just like live action, and I think it's this close-minded way of thinking that has made the animation industry in the West so stagnant in the past few years.

Thanks for all the replies. I will point out that she is my little sister, not my daughter. She is just lucky that she has much older twin brothers who can afford a lot of DVDs between them. She loves Disney, but Spirited away can't be moved from the player atm. It's a long film too, and she sits through it all without getting bored in the slightest.

Having seen Spirited Away, Mononoke, Laputa and Totoro - I'd say Totoro is my least favourite. It has some fantastic scenes in it with the Totoro's - love the bus stop scene and the first time the little girl first sees a the totoro with a sack on it's back and those dust bugs. But I can't put my finger on why I didn't like it as much as the others - maybe it was more child orientated.
I agree that the Totoro's should have got more screentime. On the other hand it would have made them less magical.
Answer:

I know exactly what you mean. It's crazy. When people look at the anime on my shelf:
"What you bought some cartoons for?"
I don't even try to justify it any more after such a long time. Some people just don't get it. I read an amazing article on Walt Disney about how he did so much to push animation as a serious art form forward but similtaniously destroyed it for half the world also. It's because of Disney that animation is thought of to be a children's thing of course. Apparantly the Japanese hate Disney films. Miyazaki gets offended when people compare him to Disney. He hates the way all of the films are the same and struggle to tell stories.
The article was really good. If I find it again I'll post a link.

Totally agree, i can't believe people are so narrow minded because it is animated and not live action:brickwall
Answer:

If anything rather than being more "kiddie" ... Totoro is a psychedelic trip of the greatest proportions ... and is miyazaki's masterpiece of sublimal cinema ... :D
Answer:

I've only seen Spirited Away, Kiki, Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke. Of these I'd say Kiki is probably the best for your sister (and fine for 30 something blokes like me :)). Castle in the Sky has more action and a bit of violence as does mononoke.

Personally, I love Totoro and rate it as one of my favourite films... but every Ghibli / Miyazaki / Takahata film I've seen I love.
Don't thing anyone has mentioned another unforgettable Takahata film, Pom Poko, which is simply great :)
Answer:

Another vote for "Panda Go Panda" as an excellent film for the very young (and their parents, I'm still charmed by it). The R1 edition is perfectly acceptable, go and buy a copy now!
My expectations for "Totoro" were very high when I first saw it, and I must confess to being a little disappointed. However, repeated viewings have seen it become one of my favourites....
I'm not sure that the lack of a dub (on the R3) is such a problem. The film does not rely on dialogue other than to move the story along, and a parent can talk under 5s through what is happening and what is being sad. My 3-year old and 5-year old love the film despite it being subtitles only. A dub would be good, but is not essential....

Answer:

Am I right in believing that the R3 of Totor has literal subs (rather than the dubtitles of the R2 Jap?).
If so, I may pick it up if it's cheeep. How much from DDDHouse?

I wouldn't bother with coolashop there shutting down for a while, and there cs isn't as good as dddhouse.
Answer:

Are Disney releasing any more of the Ghibli films this year, or are they leaving it at Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky?

How are the R3's anyway? For some reason, no reviews seem to exist {except dvdtimes**
Anamorphic with literal subs are all I'm after.

A: Put back
B: totally rubbish compared to the R1's

I've got R3 versions of Totoro, Laputa, Porco Rosso, Pom Poko, Whisper of the Heart & Only Yesterday.
All have anamoprhic transfers (though I understand that early R3 editions of Porco Rosso did not). Not sure if they are literal subtitles or dubtitles. There's been talk on this board about "Only Yesterday" having inferior subtitles, btu having watched it yet....
