Wrong Turn

Question:
This is a new horror movie that's just opened in the US starring Eliza Dushku. It's about a group of city folk hunted in the woods by mutant, inbred, hillbilly types with axes. Judging by the trailer, it's a return to the old school 1970s Hills Have Eyes / Texas Chainsaw Massacre slasher film. They don't seem to have shown it to critics, which isn't unusual for a slasher film, but the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes aren't that bad for the genre - almost 50% good - and by all accounts it's a full-blooded horror flick, without all the post-modern irony. Oh and did I mention Eliza Dushku is in it? We get it at the end of June but I wondered if anyone had seen it in the States?
Answer:

John Patterson gave it a good write up in the Guardian today.
Answer:

I am really looking forward to this one:clap:
Answer:

This sounds quite good. And Eliza Dushku. :norty:
The review on dvdtimes (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=CinemaReview&id=229&story=4536) is also positive. :)
Answer:

ReelTime Cinemas has it down for a June 27th UK release, unless that has changed - it was originally scheduled for a Sept. release here (the US), but it was bumped up to May :)
Answer:

Answer:

Saying that it does have Eliza in it and it looks ALOT better than Cabin Fever (i can't believe people are looking forward to this, the trailer is dire).

It does... loads - it is very-well written and acted and worth a look :)
Answer:

Saw this last night, a fairly standard teens(?) get lost in the woods and get picked off one by one type affair. There are quite a few jumpy moments if you didn't see them coming (like my girlfriend!) and a fair few laughs - not sure if they were all intentional though! Surprised to see that the 'creatures' were created by Stan Winston though, although they are fairly gruesome the man is definitely slacking! Worth a watch, especially if you have low expectations like I did after reading some poor reviews. Overall a 3/5 for pure entertainment value.
Answer:

yep I agree - saw it and thought it was standard fodder....all the woman and a few guys were jumping out their seats at the odd few moments....generally just a bit of slice and dice fun....no great acting, no great script, no great anything....fairly average
Answer:

I thought it was pretty good. Stronger violence than usual, some well placed shock moments and very little sentimentality. Also, at 84 minutes it didn't outstay its welcome.
Answer:

The little skinny hillbilly that climbed the trees reminded me far too much off Gollum
Answer:

I loved it, no flab, no post-modern jokes...
Just sub-genre perfect. And for a change some nice suspense and build up.

It really is a good film - at least three of us liked it :D
Answer:

After looking forward to this, I was a bit disappointed. Not a bad film and pretty well-paced like everyone's said, with some good suspense stuff and lots of gore. I thought the start was a bit awkward though. Four people are killed offscreen Friday The 13th style before the story's even begun and the legend of the hillbillies is established over the titles - for me, that ruins the build-up. You know what's coming. Also I wish it was a little less predictable who's not going to be around for the end credits and I'm not sure making the hillbillies grotesquely mutated monsters who never speak added to it. Giving them personalities like the families in Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes might have helped a lot. As it is, you can hardly distinguish between them and it's only by reading the cast list that I was even sure how many there were.

Their lack of personalities and individualization, is what made them interesting to me - just like the family in The X-Files epsiode Home - you never had a clue :)

THAT'S what it kept reminding me of. There was something very familiar and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Cheers for that! :D
Answer:

Well there's probably going to be a sequal after watching the ending!

I expect the guys from the studio have got their calculators out now and are working out if a sequel is 'economically viable'. The answer will probably be 'yes, as long as we get rid of the chick from Buffy and the dude from Taken cos their fees will cut into our profit'! :D
Answer:

caught this today, thought it was ok, although it seemed to have been written by some work experience kids, almost every horror movie cliche' occured during the short running time, however i did enjoy it especially for the one great kill involving the death in the tree
Answer:

What about the death of that sheriff , the timing was fantastic. Thought that was hilarious.

yeah that what it reminded me off.
these inbred Hillbillies make for great Horror movies! :D
Thought it started off a bit crap, the girl trying to find a bathroom when she's in the middle of the woods?? the main girl playing the typical hard knock role (just look at her walk) ... it did get better though and it was good to see a horror film were the hero looks as though he can handle himself and not some wimpy looking teen.
Answer:

I saw it today, and thought it was pretty good. It was quite slow to start, but once it got going it was very enjoyable. Not exactly scary (in fact the cannibals were pretty cheesy at times), but there were a few tense moments, such as one when they're trying to escape from the cannibals' den without waking them up, and some decent shock moments -- the death of the sheriff was a genuine surprise. It was a bit like a cross between Jeepers Creepers, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th. 3.5 out of 5.
Answer:

very average. dushku is always good tho.
Answer:

I quite liked it. Thought it was good to see an "18" rated, that's played straight for a change (and a fairly nasty one at that)
First half hour (up until we see the hillbillies) was excellent.
I'd give it 3/5
Answer:

I didn't think it was worthy of an 18. It was certainly no more violent than Final Destination 2 or Jeepers Creepers, both rated 15. Am I right in thinking this film got a serious butchering from the MPAA beforehand?
Answer:

i couldnt understand why it was an 18 either, have seen gorier 15's in recent times i.e FD2 and Jason X

AFAIK, the trailers got a butchering from the MPAA, the film got out without serious cuts.
I quite enjoyed it. Given the lack of decent "mutant hillbillys stalk cute teenage types through woods" movies in this day and age, I'll take whatever I can get ;)
Answer:

Generic, standard, run-of-the-mill stuff, but thoroughly enjoyable.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the MTV generation. 3/5
Answer:

I saw it last night and enjoyed it. The volume in the cinema was well loud though. Don't know if it was deliberate but it made the 'fright' scenes a bit more edgy.
The wife thought it was going to be crap but really enjoyed it, there's a first !
4/5
Answer:

Saw it yesterday and was pretty disappointed. The only reason I went to see it was because it's rare these days to find a movie rated 18. Not sure why it got that rating though.
Why do filmmakers these days think that loud bangs combined with quick cut scenes equal horror? It's a cheap effect and does nothing but ruin the movie :|
Answer:

I thought this film was really good, at last a tense, suspensful horror film. And is getting back to the "The Hills Have Eyes" and TCM days of horror films.
I hope they keepo making them like this.
Plus the sound was really loud in the cinema I was in too. Even things like the car speeding away makes you jump because the sound is so high. But that all adds to the creepiness. Loved it.
Answer:

I didn't consider it to be a frightening movie at all, but there were some edgy moments. It was more a thrill-ride than anything else.

I really enjoyed this, and fell foul of the brown trouser moment several times!
You could pick this movie to pieces, but as a saturday night and a couple of beers kind of film, it worked!
Answer:

It was a hell of a lot better than Cabin Fever.
Answer:

I thought it was :gag:
I won't even waste my time going to see Cabin fever.
Seeing the review on Film 2003 was enough.
Answer:

I missed this one at the flicks was gonna order the region 1 anyone know if its worth it?
Answer:

Thought this was pretty good as a no brainer.. compared to cabin fever its an oscar winner:thumbs:
Answer:

Enjoyed it... Shame about the naff rock-climbing bit at the start though! (It borders on 'unintentionally funny' for me). Would have preferred to just kick off with the opening titles. As in contrast, the gore in later scenes is far from funny!...
It certainly makes a change from all the PG-13 teen-horror stuff that gets churned out (Darkness Falls, The Ring etc). And the decision to remove a scene where the two lead characters get intimate beneath a waterfall shows that the filmmakers have done their best to minimise the formulaic Hollywood elements. I think I liked it because, after brilliantly introducing the threat of the movie, the subsequent chase capitalises on that momentum (and nearly everything happens on-the-move). So, there's never any painfully lengthy exposition to endure and also, unlike a lot of titles in this genre, it never gets off-track with huge twists either...
Basically, it's a competent enough horror/pursuit movie, which, whilst pretty shallow, is nevertheless entertaining...
Answer:

i saw this in the US last June, and at one point i think i nearly walked out, i thought it would be far too disturbing!! (I think that was when the kids first were in the cabin)
But it got less disgusting and wasn;t too bad. Quite tense, pretty short and i was glad it was daylight when i left the cinema,
Catherine
Answer:

I thought it was ok, nothing special.
Still, at least its better than Cabin Fever! :D
Answer:

Saw it last night but was pretty drunk TBH so i'd like to see it again before it make a final comment but it was suitably nasty and ever so slightly hard edged, more so than most teen horrors these days.
I wish they'd ban heavy metal from horror films though, that track over the ending credits spoiled the mood for me a bit. I would have liked some creepy sound effects like they used in the 70s.
Answer:

As with a few horror films recently (Darkness Falls springs to mind), the beginning was excellent, really scary, but the film then fell away significantly. I agree with ryonhilluk, it was ok, but nothing special

Pretty much what I thought, started okay but then started to suck pretty quickly. By the end I thought it were ****e :(
Answer:

Well, it looks like a sequel is in the works - sadly, the screenwriters are Turi Meyer and Al Septien, whose credits include Leprechaun 2, Sleepstalker and Candyman: Day of the Dead :| It'll also be straight-to-DVD
