bottom, young ones, red dwarf, etc...

Question:
How come the bbc dvd department takes ages to release the entire series of the above comic master pieces, but can role out other medicore stuff straight away...
anyone know when the above shows are being released completely?
thanx
martin
Answer:

red dwarf is understandable taking a while because they need to remaster each episode and great all the extras.
Newer stuff get's released quicker because it has more sales potential.
Answer:

Just pay around £27 for the R1 Young Ones.......both seasons, good picture and sound, and two bonus eps.

Why are you recommending the R1??
It`s cut.
R4 is the best version....although admittedly it`s only the first series. :)
Answer:

I thought the R1 was uncut?
Answer:

nope reg 1 is cut in several episodes, music has been altered/removed and most criminally the performance of "subteranean homesick blues" has been chopped out completely :brickwall
theres a reg 1 release of bottom due out soon that looks to feature all episodes - whether it will be uncut or not is anyone's guess
Answer:

Didn't know that...... :(
Up till you telling me that, ignorance was in fact bliss.....
Any ideas what's been cut/moved and whereabouts?
Answer:

What about "Filthy,Rich And Catflap" too ??

Indeedy.
Mind you, they arsed about with the VHS releases by deleting one of them soon after release and they're cut too.
I've got them both now and it's alright, but the cuts are mainly in the last episode and they're pretty drastic. The 'Consider Yourself' ( ) part is pretty much gone altogether.
I can't say I knew that the R1 of The Young Ones was cut in any places aside from the Subterrainian Homesick Blues song. Mind you, ain't watched the set all that closely yet.
Answer:

And while we're in this ball park, when is the "The Dangerous Brothers Present World of Danger" gonna be out on DVD?
I've got a pretty old VHS copy of this, oddly enough a BBC release, considering they were transmitted on Channel 4.
Answer:

Thats uncanny, i was just about to post about The Young Ones.
How come Dvdcompare say that R2 and R4 are equal, when R2 is cut, and apparentlt R4 is uncut?
Answer:

R2 and 4 are identical in every respect. The BBC made minimal cuts - just enough to make it legally releasable on the budget they had.
The R1 version has many more cuts.
Answer:

The problem with the BBC is that they often don't own the rights to distribute the DVD, only to broadcast the series.
This is why there is no Game On Series 2 and 3 on DVD
This is why there is no Joking Apart available on any bloody format :brickwall
And this is why there is no Holding On

AFAIK the ONLY cut is the Dylan song... I've seen both series many times off old VHS's, and can't say I noticed any other cuts at all... Subliminal bits still in there, as suprisingly (given the Yanks) is the racist copper amongst other bits.
A link to a list of these cuts would be nice, just out of interest.

Yeah,I have that on VHS too.
What about Kevin Turvey as well?? I have a VHS of him that would be good to have on DVD (with extra's by Rik)

Bottom is on the way in R1 land, due out september/October, complete set featuring all series.
Warner who do them in them in the states are class, they did Blackadder And The Young Ones and both are superb sets.

Ohh yes the Bottom set will be mine too!!!!
Answer:

Only cuts in R2/4 are music substitutions. R1 has the cut scene plus many more substitutions.
Answer:

But music cuts aside, I thought the R2s had been slightly trimmed here and there to be more politcally friendly or something?
Answer:

I'd be surprised if Bottom makes it uncut. If they've cut The Young Ones for being too un-PC, gawd knows how they'll butcher the later (and greater) Bottom.

Answer:

The only problem with R1 Bottom is that you're getting PAL video transferred into NTSC.
From examples I've seen of this in the past I think I'd rather hold off, and cross my fingers for a decent R2 release.
Oh, and the BBC also needs to release season collections of the David Renwick shows One Foot in the Grave and If You See God, Tell Him.

New documentary-style (mockumentary) comedy about the drudgery of every day office life. Answer:

Why the hell dont BBC UK get off their fat lazy arses and release a Bottom boxset?
Answer:

The BBC are very cautious, over cautious many would say, when it comes to releasing TV on DVD in this country. Witness the drip feed of Porridge, Dr Who and Yes Minister for example.
Each release represents a significant investment, and must be self sustaining in order for them to continue. This is why the BBC has licenced out many series to be released by other companies such as Network, Playback or Acorn.
BBCWW is dealing, certainly in North America, with a much more established and mature market, hence the release of box sets of popular TV shows there and not here.
I'm sure as and when the TV DVD here matures, we will start to see an exponential increase in the DVD releasesome of Auntie Beebs excellent back catalogue.

found it listed on Ticketmaster
Answer:

The Beeb UK wont release decent sets Exception of Red Dwarf sets, cos they simply dont give a toss about what the fans of the series want. They release carp like Orrible and Linda Green on DVD but when it comes to popular programmes they bring out a half arsed releases like the Blackadders or Only fools with no Extras and the US makers pull out all the stops and make the Beeb UK look like a bunch of plebs who don't give a carp about it's own product!!!:(
Answer:

Perhaps the reason the BBC is finding it difficult to sell TV on DVD is because the current releases are generally rubbish?
With something as culty as The Young Ones, fans are going to want all the uncut episodes in one package with lots of extras. If the Beeb can't understand that then they'll never get very far.
The BFI's own Archive Television line takes classic BBC productions and runs with them - gorgeous transfers, superb extras and great pieces of television. It shouldn't be left to secondary companies to be doing this (though in this instance, I'm very glad they are!)
Answer:

That isn't fair. All the Doctor Who, League of Gentlemen and Red Dwarf discs are Special Editions, and we get them here first with the exception of 1 Dr Who boxed set. Every single 16:9 series they've released has been anamorphic. And what about I, Claudius? US gets a crap release full of cuts, we get a 5 disc boxed set of remastered episodes and some great extras. And we are getting that classic comedy, Abigail's Party!
I've bought some R1 discs of BBC programmes before, and does it really matter? If you can get hold of a multi-region player, you can just get these because BBC US titles released through Warner always have excellent conversions.
Wait till you see what the Beeb are gonna bring out in the UK this autumn. The only problem is, a lot of them haven't been announced yet because the BBC are crap at getting out PR early.
One definite is a 2 disc Yes Minister series 3 including Party Games as an extra, because it's already been issued in R4 when Roadshow jumped the gun and released it early - note that the R4 version is dual R4/2 encoded.
We also have some other BBC stuff getting SEs from other companies. The Goodies discs are remastered with some great extras, and Till Death Do Us Part is going to get similar treatment.
One series I'd really like to see released anywhere is So Haunt Me. Can anyone else remember it? It was a BBC sitcom that was on Sunday nights in the early 90s. It's main character was an old woman who'd choked to death on a chicken bone and haunted the family. Only the kids could see her and the mother hear her. Was great.

I liked So Haunt Me too - Miriam Karlin as the Jewish ghost was great. It went on at least a series too long though. Can't imagine it being released in the near (or far) future unfortunately :(

Ends at series 3, and doesn't include the special that leads into "Yes Prime Minister".
Though looking more cloesly, there's a follow up boxed set for Yes Prime Minister. I hope they see sense and include the specials.

Yeah, the Turvey one would be v.welcome. Spookily enough, I was listening to the audio tape version (dumped onto MD) this very morning in the car, whilst driving to PC World.
It's Ok, pretty funny, but I think you need the visuals really on that one, if only for Mayall's goggly eyeballs and the Turvey crap clothes sense...:)
Answer:

for those asking about the details of cuts/alterations to the young ones, i found the following info by doing a few google searches....
i can't recall the links but i saved the info cos i am trying to establish if i can make up a complete uncut set of episodes from the reg 1 dvd which i own and my mates old betamax off air recordings from the original BBC broadcasts (some of which are unplayable any longer due to being worn/damaged)
anyway...here's some of the info i found :
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Every episode in the series (except for "Flood") had a musical guest. "Cash" featured a music sequence while Neil's mates accompanied him to the army recruitment office, attracting a crowd of followers as they walk. The song was called "Subterranean Homesick Blues", played by an act billing themselves as "Ken Bishop's Nice Twelve". Ken Bishop was a fictional name used by Simon Brint, reused years later when he appeared in the show "French & Saunders". In this episode, members of his band (the "Nice Twelve") included Stewart Copeland (of The Police), Jools Holland (of Squeeze), and others. But here the entire musical sequence is missing in action: a rather sloppy edit shows the boys leaving for the recruitment office, and then it just jumps to what I take to be the end of the number, playing out the end while the other lads shove Neil into the army office to be recruited.
There are also other seemingly obvious edits here and there: the sort of nip-and-tuck you associate with trimming a show down for time reasons.
From what I can gather, these versions are uncut with two exceptions: the musical number "Subterranean Homesick Blues" by Ken Bishops Nice Twelve in "Cash" and Neil singing "Hello Darkness, my old friend" in "Nasty" have been snipped because the BBC never bothered to clear the rights to use these songs. Other than that, they are complete.
Whats missing? DISC.1/Episode:"Boring" is missing the intro. music.( "Good Day Sunshine" by The Beatles.). DISC.2/Episode: "Cash",the musical number,"Subterranean Homesick Blues" performed by "Ken Bishops Nice Twelve" ( Featuring Jools Holland, and Stewart Copeland among others. ).
Note that due to copyright reasons (presumably) in the United States, any American edition you buy of The Young Ones will have a couple of scenes deleted. These are:
Cash
The American edition of Cash does not feature the Subterranean Homesick Blues musical segment. What happens is that SPG shouts "Don't tell 'em you're a pacifist!" and there's a crossfade to the scene outside the recruitment office, with new incidental music.
Nasty
The sequence of Neil in the darkened bathroom singing "Hello Darkness, my old friend" has also been cut out.
OVERALL : R1 - The Region 1 release includes the complete second series, as well as other additional extra features. Note however that it has had some cuts/edits made to it and you might want to opt for the R2/4 for this reason.

Cuts
R1 - Episode 'Cash' has been cut to remove the Jools Holland musical number, as well as a number of other edits.
R2 - ?m ?s - This version contains a number of audio cuts to the incidental music in the soundtrack - and not musical substitutions with cover versions as on other BBC DVDs, just outright silence
R4 - No cuts
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i know the above is all abit of a muddle.... conflicting accounts from different sites - but what i established is that there are definite cuts to the reg 1 dvd due to musical copyright, and that the reg 2 copies are missing yet more musical cues. the general opinion seems to be that series 1 on reg 4 is uncut as opposed to the reg 2 version - i was considering trying to obtain the reg 4 version but note that someone earlier in the thread suggests that the reg 4 is actually identical to the reg 2 version. If `anyone can shed any further light on this i'd be grateful!

All BBC UK discs are dual coded for R2 and 4. Any BBC disc in R4 that is distributed by Roadshow will be identical to the one available in the UK.
The R2/4 version as less cuts through some are more obvious. The music rights situation means some are easier to clear in the UK, so less has been chopped out.
IMHO, it's best to wait until the end of the year to see what the BBC do with series 2 in the UK.

cheers for the clarification
