Need erotic movies recommendations

Question:
I'm particularly looking for european erotic titles or simply movies with good erotic content, but recommendations of quality erotic movies from any country are welcome.
I'm NOT interested in commercial hardcore (I believe some people tend to mix up erotic/exploitation cinema with porno), I could get all of that I wanted for free even if I bothered with it, thanks.
Some examples of the kind of stuff I'm looking for could range, for instance, from Walerian Borowczyk exploitation titles such as Immoral Tales/Contes Immoraux or The Beast/La Bête all the way to films such as Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango In Paris, or Tinto Brass pieces such as Frivolous Lola/Monella.
TIA.
Answer:

uhm, Betty Blue's pretty good..
er, so i've heard :suspect:
Answer:

Les Valseuses (US title is Going Places - only available on Reg 1).
Betty Blue also rocks, but get the Reg 4 Director's Cut.
Answer:

I remember watching a French film on Chanel 4 about 9 or 10 years ago about 2 men travelling around France getting their end away. I think they ended up sleeping with a 16 year old.
The only part I can really remember is when they visit her home for the first time (it's empty) and they go through her stuff and sniff her knickers.
Honestly though, I thought it was a good film and was wondering if anybody knew the name of it from my vague description.

That's the one I cited. It's called Les Valseuses (Going Places is it's Reg 1 title). It's an hilarious movie :D

Good man  Just be warned, the subtitles aren't as good as they were on the Channel 4 broadcast. They do the job, but the Channel 4 subtitles were better phrased in some places and thus a bit funnier. These subtitles are also 'Americanised' (e.g. whenever they talk about money, Francs are converted to Dollars  ). Only version out there right now though :)

Thanks for the warning. I'll make do for now, and just hope they bring out a better version.:)

Yeah that's what I thought. No indication that any other version will be released and I just had to own this movie so..... :D

I concur Les Valseuses is an excellent film, hilarious and irreverent; not what I would call an "erotic" film although it does contain some sex(y) scenes, some of which are played more for laughs. Great soundtrack from Stephane Grappelli.
By the way, there is a budget unsubtitled French R2 version available which you can usually pick up new on ebay for a fiver or so.
Can anyone tell me something about the other Blier film featuring Depardieu, Dewaere and Miou Miou - Preparez Vos Mouchoirs???
Answer:

Try Jean Rollin's Fascination - guaranteed to give you the horn. :D Most of his vampire films have some surrealist arty lesbian content.
If you want something more recent try Sex & Lucia. :norty:
Answer:

Okay, not European but have you tried Brian De Palma's Body Double? It was on Channel 4 recently and is also up for sale hear &threadid=190275
{Shameless I know**
Answer:

Quiet Days in Clichy and Jess Franco's Eugenie...The Story of her Journey into Perversion are very good indeed.
Answer:

Chitty Chitty Gang Bang
No?
Answer:

I thought it was Pretty ****** Gang Bang?
Answer:

Julio Medem's 'Sex and Lucia' would seem to fit with the other suggestions here. A bit more complicated than movies like 'Les Valseuses' or 'Betty Blue', but the Tartan DVD in currently only £8.99 in the www.play.com World Cinema sale.
Answer:

I think that was the poorly received sequel!
Answer:

Ai No Corrida (released on DVD as Realm of the Senses) and, if you can track it down, its equally good "sequel" Ai No Borei (aka Empire of Passion).
Answer:

I would recommend Ai No Corrida too - it's a strangely touching tale of sexual obsession.
Answer:

Don't bother with Ai No Corrida folks, that has been in the golden throne of my favorite erotic cinema for some years now :norty:
I already added some titles from the above posts to my "check out" list, keep 'em coming guys
Also, I'm under the impression that the wild 70s provided the best part of this particular movie genre, any more opinions on this ?
Answer:

Malena, featuring Monica Bellucci, is erotic in part - especially the uncut Italian edition (no English subtitles) featuring more of the adolescent boy's masturbatory fantasies of Ms Bellucci , some of which are quite funny too.

Answer:

The only film which ever really turned me on for more than a scene or two was Summer Lovers, a very un-Hollywood 1982 movie from the director of Grease, starring Daryl Hannah and Peter Gallagher as an American couple who meet a French girl on holiday in Greece and end up having a three-way relationship with her. There's not even a lot of sex in it but still, great sexy atmosphere, gorgeous locations (and girls) and it sure makes you think about taking your girlfriend to Greece next summer.
Answer:

I guess David Lynch's classic Blue Velvet and also Lost Highway would count as erotica of some form. Certainly fantastic movies anyway.
Answer:

What do people class as erotic films? Betty Blue, Blue Velvet, I wouldn't class as erotic. They may both contain nudity but that isn't the same as being erotic.

I think it just depends on what floats your boat. Some people would class hard core as erotic while others wouldn't.
Personally I class a film as erotic when there is an air of sexual tension built up. There doesn't have to be nudity (all though you can never go wrong with a little bit:norty: )
Answer:

Korean film Happy End (available v cheap from DDDHouse) has a couple of *really* <s>dirty</s> <s>n0rty</s> <s>pervy</s> HOT sex scenes in.
One at the beginning rivals Betty Blue's IMHO and the one in the middle where the guy goes for that *sushi* taste on her office desk is nice too. :D

I don't think I could give a better answer myself.
I also don't think it's possible to come up with a definitive definition of erotica as a genre, but I would generally rate a movie as "erotic" depending on how much of its running time falls into the above description of sexual atmosphere and scenes.
So, Ai No Corrida would definitely be one, but Basic Instinct would be a crime thriller which happens to have a couple of potentially arousing scenes.
Of course this will ever remain a gray area, subjective to each viewer's notion of what is sexy enough. If you look back into my first post, you'll now perhaps realize why I had enough care to write something like "... erotic movies or simply movies with good erotic content".
That being said, I'm still waiting for the more "naughty" (explicit, dirty, sleazy, you name it) recommendations ;)
Answer:

Blue Velvet and Lost Highway definitely count then because they both deal with sexual obsession in one form or another :)

What is the best region for that film?
Answer:

Anyone who describes either Blue Velvet or Lost Highway as "erotic" needs to seek help without delay!
Answer:

Hmm how about Belle De Jour (UK R2 release permanently on hold as far as I can see) or Romance (which isn't romantic and is a young woman failing to make a relationship with her somewhat apathetic boyfriend and having empty sex with other people (including S & M stuff towards the end)). Sitcom is a weird sex comedy (I like the roulette game with courgettes as a prize) and then theres The Ages of Lulu by Bigas Luna (lob in some of his other films as well such as Jamon Jamon featuring a early Penelope Cruz performance). Even Pedro Almodovar for that matter.
Oh and Maitresse where Gerard Depardieu gets caught burgling a professional dominatrix's place and ends up in a relationship with her (okay so first he has to help her with a customer by urinating over him) but thats not available aside from as a american video.

You have no choice. The HK cheapo release only.:norty:
Answer:

<I>Maitresse</I> should be getting a UK DVD release in the not too distant future - and I've heard rumours of a DVD of the one Seventies Borowczyk feature that I haven't yet seen, <I>The Story of Sin</I>, but as far as I can see this has yet to materialise.
Of the Borowczyks that haven't been mentioned thus far, my overwhelming first choice would be <I>Blanche</I> (which I actually find rather more subversively erotic than many of his more obvious genre pieces), though I'd also recommend <I>Goto, Blood of Dr Jekyll/Docteur Jekyll et les Femmes</I> and <I>Rites of Love/Ceremonie d'Amour</I>. I wasn't wildly impressed by <I>The Streetwalker/La Marge</I> or <I>Behind Convent Walls/Interno d'un convento</I>, but in all fairness this may well be because I've only seen them in poorly dubbed English versions, which does tend to wreck the atmosphere somewhat.
I've only seen two Tinto Brasses (<I>Caligula</I> aside), and of those two I enjoyed <I>Frivolous Lola</I> more than <I>All Ladies Do It/Cosi fan tutte</I>, though the latter has its moments (again, I've only seen those two in dubbed English).
Jan Svankmajer's <I>Conspirators of Pleasure</I> is a decidedly acquired taste, but a personal favourite of mine - he set out to make the world's first entirely erotic film that had absolutely no visually explicit content (bar the hilarious opening credits): he originally conceived it in 1970 as an exercise in what he thought he could get past the Czech censors at the time and finally filmed it in 1996 exactly the same way he would have done 26 years earlier. I've discussed it in more detail <A HREF="http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=427&story=350">here</A>.
And while I'm bearing the original edict in mind, I must put in a word for <I>The Opening of Misty Beethoven</I>, a rare example of a US-made hardcore film that has a much subtler, wittier and much more "European" feel than most of its ilk - and the VCX DVD tries hard with what are clearly less than wonderful materials.

You need to watch them again or think about them harder as you've clearly missed key aspects of the plot ;)
Spoilers for Blue Velvet
Frank Booth has an obsession with Dorothy Vallens and the two indulge in S&M. Dorothy then continues the S&M with Jeffrey, who is less comfortable with it. Jeffrey is sexually obsessed with Dorothy at the start, but less so towards the end of the movie.
Spoilers for Lost Highway
Throughout the film, we are treated to Fred Madison's sexual obsessions with both Renee Madison and Alice Wakefield, and the Mystery Man seeks in taunting with this. Although these characters are symbolic in that they represent certain aspects of Fred's personality, there is still an eroticism to the relationships. There is also the relationship with Sheila. At the start of the film, there is the aspect of voyeurism with the filming of the house and the dropping off of the video tapes. There is also the Mr. Eddy character, who is a porn king.
I think that lays those two to rest
Answer:

Fairly obvious choices, but I'd recommend Henry & June and Mira Nair's Kama Sutra. And since others have recommended David Lynch, personally, I found several scenes in Mulholland Dr. rather erotic too.
Answer:

There are some hot scenes in recent Spanish cinema, e.g. Matador, Red Squirrel, Open Your Eyes but I'm not sure these would classify as erotic films.
Answer:

One Deadly Summer (1984), directed by Jacques Becker, starring Isabella Adjani(?spelling). Revenge movie, good plot. A number of erotic sequences.
Answer:

Patrice Leconte's LE PARFUM D'YVONNE is one of my faves, as is THE HAIDRESSER's HUSBAND (the latter has some really tender/erotic moments amongst the comedy/sadness).
Answer:

<I>Of Freaks and Men</I> is another firm favourite of mine - a wonderfully pervy Russian film shot in sepia-tinted monochrome about a gang of pornographers at work in turn-of-the-20th-century St Petersburg who have to deal both with the transition from still to moving images and with the arrival of a couple of singing Siamese twins, offering whole new vistas in terms of exploitation.
As with the Svankmajer film I mentioned above, it works beautifully both as a philosophical critique of its subject and as an excuse to show loads of shots of semi-naked women getting beaten with birch twigs - more details <A HREF="http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=936">here</A>.

You might want to get a viewing of this quite soon then !
An excellent flick IMHO, Spader's character does an excellent job of manipulating women through punishment by spanking.
Answer:

The Story Of O
An elegant, lush and surprisingly well-crafted film starring Eurocult faves Corinne Clery and Udo Kier.
Answer:

Dunna if its any good ICE but there's a film on 4 tonight called L'ennui
Review
Director Cedric Kahn explores the struggle for power that underpins many relationships in this erotic comedy drama. This might have made for heavy going, were it not for the outstanding performances of Charles Berling as a struggling academic and Sophie Guillemin as his teenage lover. Contains nudity.

I wanted to know what time West wing was on and i saw that it was after and maybe you'd like it.........
I reckon i'll catch the first 10 mins after west wing and if its good i will watch the rest :D
Answer:

I consider Crash a modern erotic masterpiece and would also be another to recommend Sex & Lucia. Try out some Japanese 'Pink' cinema too - these can be pretty cool in a weird kind of way.
