Bad news for R2 only classic movie fans; R1 fans get the sumptuous Fox Studio Classics releases of The Ghost & Mrs Muir, Anastasia, Inn of the Sixth Happiness, Love is a Many Splendoured Thing, Mark of Zorro etc., each disk packed with extras; commentaries, docos etc.
According to the specs posted on play, the most R2 fans can expect in the way of extras for the same classics listed above are trailers and interactive menus. The Day The Earth Stood Still (another of the Fox Studio Classics in R1), wasn't quite so bad; at R2ers got the commentary, but missed out badly on a fascinating doco.
The compensation is (and I'm assuming these will share the same transfers) that, thus far, all these Fox restored classics look amazing.
If you have a choice, however, go for R1 every time.

Well, I suppose if you can't get enough of inferior picture quality and 3:2 pulldown then, yeah, go for R1 every time;)
If these are restoration jobbies then I'd much rather enjoy them with the PAL superior resolution and an image that doesn't stutter every time it moves.
As for the extras I agree it would be nice to have them - nice, but not essential. The movies are the thing as far as I'm concerned not a collection of fluffy, studio-produced extras.
As for the 4% speedup, the films - given that they come from a major studio, will almost certainly have been pitch-corrected (something which usually happens anyway and which a large number of reviewers conveniently forget to mention). Even if they haven't we've always seen these movies as 25fps video in this country so there'll be no difference anyway.

The Columbia disks of His Girl Friday appear to be almost identical in every way in R1/R2, but according to dvdbeaver.com, the R1 transfer is superior. Go figure.
However, you guys are right, what I should have said was 'if you have a choice, and you care about the docos and the commentaries, then go for R1 every time.'
Again, I actually think the docos are quite good, and the commentaries, thus far, excellent. But, again, I appreciate not every one is too fussed. :)

Quite so. The dvd of How Green Was My Valley is superb and sharp in R1 but is a lot more blurred and unclean in R2 (even with 20% extra resolution;) )
And the other point about these films (in the Fox Classics range) is that there is a rich history to the films and the more you learn about them, the better they become. It doesn't really matter if a naff (i.e throwaway) film like Get Over It (imho) misses out on commentaries and the like because 4 times out of 5 they are only self congratulatory exercises and of little actual benefit to the film.
However the documentary on The Day the Earth Stood Still gave an insight into the domestic American situation at the time of the films conception and the problems it faced. It gave an insight into Bernard Hermanns influential musical score. You can watch the film as a fun film without watching the features but for a film like this (and the others in the classics range) I find that undertanding more about these sorts of things increases the enjoyment of the film immensely.

Sure, but I think that's more to do with the source material they've used for the transfer. Sometimes the R1's have access to a new print or freshly struck interpositive unavailable to European distributors who will make do with some scrubber of a tape that's been sitting on their shelf for the last 10 years.
I do think commentaries and doccos - mainly when they come from the majors - can be very bland and guilty of airbrushing away any unpleasant details in favour of a kind of studio approved version. Paramount's Star Trek: The Motion Picture DVD is one example of this.
However I don't want to be too hard on extras because I like them just as much as anyone and there are some great extras out there, no question. But I'd still say that the movie in the best possible quality is the overriding concern for me;)
