Bo Selecta

Question:
Anyone got any news on a DVD release of this ?
Thanks
Answer:

C4 website indicates a best of will be released this year, no specific details though
Answer:

That's Propa Bo that is....
Answer:

That's proper crap more like! Cos' the whole series is funny, so why just a "best of" release
Answer:

Bo Selecta is great, and as usual we get buggered over with a bad dvd release :( :( :(

why, "as usual"?
Channel 4 comedy programmes have had consistently excellent dvd releases - "Spaced", "The Book Group", "Black Books"...
It is probably more to do with the nature and format of the show that a "best of" is the more likely candidate for release.
I would welcome a full series release as there are many hilarious moments but this show (like the BBC's "Dead Ringers") relies on a lot of "topical" comedy that very quickly looses it's relevance. This is more than likely forefront in the dvd producers' minds & they would want to create a programme that can be enjoyed at anytime in the future without prior knowledge of a particular week's events.
Just imagine how un-funny an episode of "Spitting Image" from 1985 is going to be to anyone watching it today.
Answer:

Fair point, but i was really fustrated to hear it was going to be a best of rather than complete series. I seem to read about these "Best Of"'s alot and more often than not, i am one of the ppl looking forward to a full series release. :[
Answer:

I would imagine that it'll be the two 'best of' shows that were on Ch4 a few weeks ago.
It'sa real shame as they should have done the whole series, the spots on UKPlay that had Avid (the one where he followed Jamie Oliver was very funny) and the Jonathan Ross interview (perhaps throw in the Comic Relief appearance aswell ! ;)).
Answer:

I was in tears at the Liberty X interview and the Michael Jackson bit where he said " Marrr-taaayyy, this is my kid blanket, you know why I call him that?" (if you watched it you know the rest!) :D
Just to get those 2 bits would be enough for me.
Answer:

Hee-ey ! Shambone mother edited !

Answer:

I took the brother straight out of hospital!, placenta all over my face, Thats right.
Answer:

Gah.. It wasn't like it was a huge series either, 6 eps iirc..
Lets hope there's a commentary at least.. Now, where's me **** sack..
Answer:

Answer:

Yayyyyyyyy"! thanks Jonathan
Richie is exactly right though - I have all six episodes on CD and watched back to back they can get a little tiring - and I am one of the show's biggest fans. A lot of the show is very topical, particularly Enrique's Mole.
However, the Craig David and Michael Jackson stuff is TIMELESS comedy. Brilliance!
Best show on telly last year, I am a massive fan.
Answer:

I see it is released in June....that's when the second series starts on Channel 4 too...PROPER BO!
Answer:

Looks like it's the whole series

Extras sound good too:
The DVD also contains Craig David's Life Story, Outtakes, Trailers, Avid's Picture Gallery and a huge number of deleted scene& (including a vast amount of celebrity footage). The DVD is set to stun with specially filmed interactive menus featuring Avid Merrion and some of the series most popular rubber faced characters.

It's a bloke who does his own funny impressions of celebs by wearing big rubber masks of them. He also has one or two of his own characters aswell, one being "The Bear" which he uses to interview celebs in a little treehouse, he then asks them hilariously stupid questions whilst building up to a sex related question so he can get his **** out
Well worth a look because at the very least you're bound to find a few characters that'll have you in stitches :)
So basically its a celeb themed show with interviews and silly impressions :)

Thanks, if its on TV when I visit the UK I'll have a look at it before buying the DVD.
Answer:

If previous Channel 4 DVDs are anything to go by, they'll be rerunning the first series before the DVD comes out, and the new series will be shown shortly after.

Answer:

What does Shamone mean?
Answer:

and is it shamone, shabone or as i suspect Shaomore?
either way it's one of michael jackson's phrases.
I'm Geri Helliwell innnit!
Answer:

Not sure how accurate this is likely to be, but I'm pretty sure it was subtitled (either during the series or for the 2 "best ofs") as "Jam on".
Speaking of the "best ofs", I hope they put the link material on the DVD, especially the MJ/Bashir stuff
~~stu
Answer:

MJ says "Jam On" http://members.lycos.co.uk/boneathome/BoSelecta.htm :p

superb.. Did you order yours from Play? I can't wait
Answer:

Is any of the new "Proper Bo" material (ie. the Michael Jackson/Martin Bashir stuff -- "Martay, Martay!" "Urn, baby urn! Disco inferno, that's right!") included? (I'm guessing from the short lengths that the extras listed as "Proper Bo Selecta" in the BBFC list are adverts)
~~stu
Answer:

I got my copy from PLAY this morning
Excellent DVD, although the only Proper Bo Selecta clips are the adverts.
The hidden "Keith Lemon One Night Stand" extra can be found by leaving the menu for a minute or so until the purple box with the bear changes to bright purple and the bear says " Oh look you made my tail pop out" select the box and you get Keith going on a date with Tess Daly, its very funny.
Answer:

Got the dvd at the weekend.
Absolutely awesome presentation - I think the menus are some of the best I've seen with Avid popping in to help you choose every so often.
Shame the MJ/ Bashir interview's not on here. I missed most of it when it was on tv - is it a 30min episode dedicated to the interview?
Some great extras - nice (but short) doco, amusing blooper reel, and some good deleted scenes (my personal fave is MJ doing the Samual Jackson advert for Barclays 'I couldn't say what I said - Mother******!!')
Answer:

Another thumbs up for the presentation here  I was in fits of laughter as soon as the DVD had loaded...and that was just the menu's :) Havn't looked at everything but so far it's propa bo as far as i'm concerned, and i even got a free fridge door magnet of Avid with mine :D

No, it was just some short stuff that was done for the two "Proper Bo Selecta" best-of programmes to fill the gaps between the older stuff. A lot of it (as far as I remember) was Avid sat in a cinema taunting the Craig. There were a few MJ/Bashir bits, and some other stuff (eg. the Bear). Hopefully it'll all find its way onto the S2 DVD -- assuming there is one!
~~stu
Answer:

Got to say the DVD is :notworthy. Has to have the best menus ever . Gareths' not mad is just . The blooper reel is also very funny :D
Answer:

Commentaries could be a bit annoying as Leigh is in character as Avid throughout although the other people doing it with him slip up at the start and call him by his real name.
Surprised they included the bloopers as it does break the conceit of it being a different person doing the mask stuff although amazingly most of the time he even fluffs lines in character!
Great package overall.
Answer:

Cant wait for mine to come it was posted on the 13th :suspect:
Answer:

Been going through the DVD tonight, watched most of the extras, and just got a couple of commentaries to go now. Some very, very funny stuff on there (eg. the Mariella Frostrup interview  ), the behind-the-scenes featurette was good (although it was frustrating seeing stuff from the pilot -- let's have the complete one on the S2 DVD!) and it's nice to see subs for everything (noticed some slight inaccuracies -- eg. at one point "Thank you please" is subtitled "Take a ****" -- but I'm just splitting hairs now ;)). The commentaries are funny and even a little informative (Leigh does impart some "proper" information despite constantly being in character -- although so far both Craig David and Barry Gibson, who plays the Bear, have popped in to guest on a few bits). I was surprised that they managed to maintain whole "Leigh != Avid" illusion throughout, and the mask only slips a couple of times (couple of commentary moments, one of the last bloopers has Leigh breaking character, and the naked chicken skating bit of the behind-the-scenes featurette has someone shouting his name).
This is definitely one of the best comedy series DVDs I've got (not quite as good as Spaced but it certainly makes Black Books' commentaries-and-outtakes look a little measly); good quality picture and a good selection of extras (just a little disappointing that none of the Proper Bo stuff made it, apart from the trailers, and I think the bit with the Bear and Stephen getting a poledance is from PBS as well -- also the outtake bit at the end of the featurette looks like it's from the PBS Avid links) including commentaries (damn you, Kelsey Grammar  ) and some of the best menus I've ever seen -- what more could you ask for?
Obligatory quote: Wanna see what a brother got behind his pantalons?
EDIT: Just noticed that if you select Play All, the episodes don't seem to have any timing information

Has anyone watched the Gareth Gates deleted scenes? its a **** take from the 'Tourettes' documentary on that Scottish lad in the 70's. I watched that documentary and found it incredibly sad - but I cant help laughing at this! I'm laughing to hard it hurts and I'm crying!

Answer:

Anyone know of any easter eggs?

Only one I know of is the one mentioned earlier (wait on the main menu until the bear's tail pops out then move the cursor over him to see one of Leigh's earlier characters, Keith Lemon). I thought there might be another one hidden in the bit where he tells you to select the extras but I've tried allsorts and not found anything so probably not.
Gethin: If you listen to the commentaries for the GG bits in the series and the deleted scenes then it sounds like they were told to replace those sketches with more convential GG ones (ie. taking the **** out of his stammer). I thought they sounded a little ashamed at taking the easy way out and making a joke that everyone else has done to death. They also mention petitioning C4 to let them put some tourette's stuff in the second series which makes me wonder how long ago the commentaries were recorded...

It's pretty obvious it's Avid/Leigh as the Bear:suspect:

I think Barry Gibson is a character he's done on other programmes (T4 links, possibly?). Dunno when they decided he plays the Bear, but AFAIK it's only been mentioned on the commentary anyway so I don't think there's any kind of grand plan behind it ;)

AFAIK Barry Gibson is a character he used to do on T4... so if this isn't a coincidence then he's been planning it an awful long time just to put an obscure joke on the DVD commentary :suspect: :p
