Phone Booth
Question: Just watched this and really enjoyed it. I read the screenplay a couple of years ago and have been looking forward to it since. It runs at only about 85 minutes, that's a good running time as 99% of the movie takes place in the one setting at a phone booth. As I had read the screenplay I knew what was going to happen,I do think that it has a few twists and turns though. Colin Farrell has the lead role (looking like Kevin Webster from Corrie). He's supported by Forest whitaker and Katie Holmes. I don't want to spoil viewing of the movie any further.Look out for it at the movies in a few months or find it in the usual places now. ;) Answer: I've seen the trailer a few times, and it looks decent. Kiefer Sutherland does a good disembodied voice (will be interesting to see if he proves to be as intimidating as Ted Levine was in Road Kill/Joy Ride). Answer: I didn't want to mention Keiffer as its a huge plot point, perhaps you could "spoiler" it. Answer: Saw "Phone Booth" at a preview last night. After this and "Tigerland" I now forgive Joel Schumacher for all his previous crimes against cinema! This is a superb thriller. Gripping, exciting & suspenseful with a knockout central performance from Colin Farrell. He owns this film, playing an essentially unlikable character that you really do end up feeling for. I could say more but don't want to give anything away by discussing the plot. I hope it's a huge hit. Go see it! :D  Answer: Another  from me. Farrell really is choosing his films wisely :) The time flew by with the film not really dragging at all, always keeping you on the edge of your seat  The only criticism that I have is the ending seems a little rushed Answer: I really want to see this film - besides Colin Farrell, the music on the trailer piqued my interest - I love how it all takes place in and around that phone booth :) Answer: Originally posted by TheCookieMonster The only criticism that I have is the ending seems a little rushed GIANT Spoiler..... The second you see the dead pizza guy spoilt it for me - it changed the film into your standard 'we think we've got the bad guy' or do we? balls. IMHO it would have been better if it was actually the dead pizza guy making the call OR we just never saw his face and the caller did actually commit suicide. But generally I really enjoyed it  Answer: How can Kiefer Sutherland be a spoiler when anyone who's ever seen 24 or Dark City will recognise his voice instantly? Answer: This movie has been in pre-production for years and years, and then it's been more than half a year since I saw the trailer for it with that great song The Shame of Life by Butthole Surfers and wanted to see the movie. Finaly watched it tonight, what an excellent, tight, intense thriller, I never for a moment thought it wasn't NY, it was filmed in Downtown LA, and a long time ago at that, and I think now that Colin Farrel is a more recognizable star, this is a rare case of when a shelved movie has actualy benefited from the delays. Kiefer Sutherland replacing whoever he did was an excellent decision as well, he just fits the role so well! Having done something and gotten away with it I feel for and can relate very much with Sutherland's The Caller character, and I'm very happy about the ending, there is no cop-out, nothing standard or rushed about it either. Oh and lovely Radha Mitchell, always happy to see her! :luv: The score is great as well, especialy the bit that plays after the opening slow song, during NY streets montage, I gotta get it. I haven't enjoyed a movie this much for a while (and I mean weeks, heh), one scene has actualy made me cry, so this definetly has gotta go on the top10 of 2003 so far:
Dark Blue Phone Booth ? ? Laurel Canyon ? Dreamcatcher Tears of the Sun The Hunted Cradle 2 the Grave
Note that the bottom half of movies are there only because there is nothing better to put on top10, and it's half empty as it is, it's only been about 14 weeks of crappy releases so far this year. Originally posted by Richie I hope it's a huge hit. Go see it! :D  I forgot to add, I was really excited to see that Phone Booth not only got $15 million in its first 3 days, but also upstaged A Man Apart by $4 mil! I thought Vin Diesel would pummel Phone Booth with his action flick, but no, he got his ass kicked by an Irish guy pretending to be Italian in a phone booth for 80 mins! I mean how cool is that! :D Answer: Originally posted by Lenny Nero Finaly watched it tonight, what an excellent, tight, intense thriller, I never for a moment thought it wasn't NY, it was filmed in Downtown LA, and a long time ago at that, They must have used some real NY footage as well. At least some shots during the montage at the start are definitely from Times Square. Answer: Originally posted by bronso They must have used some real NY footage as well. At least some shots during the montage at the start are definitely from Times Square. Well yeah, the opening montage, but once it goes to the phone booth, that's a set on an LA street. Answer: The official release date is the 18th right? Apparently it was due out a long time ago but was delayed due to the Washington sniper inncident. Looks good though. Answer: Just watching it now... :norty: Looks good so far... Answer: totally agree, so this at an advance screening too, totally rocks! Answer: I watched it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it...when I read a summary of the movie I thought it would have to be good to keep the interest going considering the relatively small area of interest but as I watched there were no moments of boredom. The end came a little too quick for me but I would recommend anyone see it. Answer: I went to see this yesterday, and it is definitely one of the best thrillers I have seen this year. Joel Schumacher proves that he is still capable of making a decent film, and in terms of quality, he is without a doubt on "Falling Down" form. The tension slowly builds, and keeps on mounting, and you are never sure what the "caller" is going to do next. This film is surely what the term "edge of your seat" was invented for. Colin Farrell is astonishingly good as the arrogant publicist Stu Shepard. I've only seen Farrell in supporting roles before this, but his lead performance shows that his "next big thing" tag is not unmerited. This guy is going to be a superstar. Farrell's character is an actor's showcase, and his transformation from an arrogant asshole at the beginning of the movie to a pitiful mess by the end is amazing to watch. The scene near the end where Stu bears his soul to his wife almost had me shedding a tear. Keifer Sutherland is equally superb as the twisted moral crusader/sniper. With 24, and this, Sutherland is a revitalised actor. He is so effective in Phone Booth that I think this is probably the best performance he has ever given (and without actually being physically on-screen save for the cameo at the end). Like the best movie psychos, he manages to balance between being humourous and outright menacing at the same time (but never resorting to OTT theatrics). If there is a weakness, yes the ending does seem a tad abrupt, and not everybody will be satisfied on the "character motivations" front, but ultimately I thought it was fitting. But generally I really enjoyed it  I don't think it would have worked had the caller actually been the pizza guy. It just wouldn't "fit", and you wouldn't be able to buy that the pizza guy was a highly intelligent, probably ex-military/CIA guy gone over the edge. Never seeing his face would have been effective, although I think it was also fitting (not morally, but logically) that Sutherland got away with it. Someone as highly skilled and clever as his character suggests wouldn't be caught so easily unless he allowed it. I agree with you on that, what I basically trying to say was *any* ending would be better than the standard "we got the bad guy, or did we?" crap we see in every other movie of this genre. How long before Phone Booth 2: Collect Call? :gag: Answer: I've just seen this and really enjoyed it - the only thing that spoilt it for me is it's pretty obvious how it will end. Answer: Top notch thriller and superb performances from Farrell and Sutherland. Nothing much more I can add to what has been said above other than go and see this film! Answer: I to thought this was a thoroughly enjoyable thriller. I liked the way that it mocked the expected traditional Hollywood villian motivations with the Vietnam speech and initially pretending he was a failed actor. I like to think it was Jack Bauer between season 1 and 2 of 24 working some of the demons out of his system. :D Answer: The only thing I didn't like was the dubbing on Kiefer's voice, it's too "professional" sounding. Apart from that, a nice change to all the dross around at the mo. Answer: Great film. Awful Ending. Keifer Sutherland is Cilla Black with a rifle! :D Answer: Saw the preview on Thursday, enjoyed it alot, kept you entertained throughout and was suspensful. The ending seemed a bit sudden, but it couldn't last too long. I liked how the sniper got away, it would've kinda sucked and been to expected if he'd been caught by the police and Stu was fine Answer: Another  from me, very entertaining thriller, good performances all around, not quite sure why Katie Holmes was in it though her part is so small she didn't have much to do. Got to agree with Garbo about the ending, the perfect ending for me. Answer: Hi, great film, farrel must be trying to win the award for most films in one year, farrel was great. Answer: It's the best role i've seen Farrel in, and I can see why there is a huge buzz about him in Hollywood. Vin Diesel can moan all he wants about Colin Farrel's pay cheques (as he did in an Empire interview a few months ago), but I'd like to see Vin manage to carry a film like Phonebooth. Gary A Answer:  Great film-cant believe the whole film was basically filmed in one place-it was like one extended scene. Great acting and gripping. I wonder how much it cost to make? Answer: Originally posted by moogy20 I wonder how much it cost to make? $13mil and another 25 to market. Makes me go  when marketing costs are bigger than the whole film's production budget. Answer: Very good film, very tense and exciting and with excellent work from Farrell. Only complaint, regarding the Sniper - The killer with a god complex making judgements on his victims seemed to me a bit too close to Kevin Spacey in Seven and he seemed a little too hip and intelligent to seriously believe his own motive. I thought there might be a twist, like he really was a failed actor after all. That's just a small niggle though, this should be high up on your must-see list. Answer: I thought it was very good too, I don't think I'd buy on DVD though as it wouldn't be as good upon repeat viewings. Here's my review: http://www.jimsflicks.com/Reviews/PhoneBooth.htm Answer: Originally posted by Lenny Nero $13mil and another 25 to market. Makes me go  when marketing costs are bigger than the whole film's production budget. Wow, that's almost unbelievable...if it wasn't Hollywood. Answer: $38 million..............mmmmmmmmm........I think movie chiefs should start thinking more with their wallets rather than splashing the cash wherever and whenever........... Answer: Saw this today, and agreed absolutely fantastic! Very very gripping and with the added attraction of the gorgeous Colin Farrell! :luv: Answer: This movie is pretty cool. It's an improvement on Batman and Robin I think. Answer: This film was great except for those hookers with the annoying voices! I know they needed to be in it but their voices were just :gag: Great film! Answer: The hookers were suppost to be annoying, they therefore did their job right. :D Answer: Originally posted by Lenny Nero The hookers were suppost to be annoying, they therefore did their job right. :D Yeah thats true but I still want to shoot them when they speak! Answer: was a pretty good film but i don't really think it was anything too amazing Answer: really really well made enjoyable thrillr, not sure about the tony scott-esque opening but this was a very very good film, keeping u gripped with such a simple concept. Farrel was excellent, as was Whitaker and Sutherland. Farrel is really looking to be a superb actor these days... he's got some gr8 performances already, keep it up! Schumacher, keep doing this, not things like bad company, and dare i mention it, batman forever and batman and robin.... :) Answer: Originally posted by Lenny Nero The hookers were suppost to be annoying, they therefore did their job right. :D If they were doing their job right, there wouldn't have been any talking (annoying or otherwise) :D I finally saw Phone Booth and loved it - Colin Farrell is excellent, and I thought the ending was the only way to go. I also felt Keifer Sutherland's voiceover was perfect casting :) Answer: Saw it today. A truly inventive, tense and great film. Farrell gave the performance of his life and Sutherland added the dry wit needed to break up the tension. All I can say is thank GOD, Jim Carrey and Will Smith turned it down. I just can't see them carrying the role as good as Farrell. Answer: Saw it today. A truly inventive, tense and great film. Answer: I dont think everyone caught that could you post it again  Answer: Yeh it was good but that whole subplot involving the mafia guy's wife and the subsequent scenes with the little kid was a little far-fetched Answer: Originally posted by DrX Yeh it was good but that whole subplot involving the mafia guy's wife and the subsequent scenes with the little kid was a little far-fetched Huh? What mafia, what kid? Answer: Originally posted by DrX but that whole subplot involving the mafia guy's wife and the subsequent scenes with the little kid was a little far-fetched So the cops new that Internal Afairs were on to them from the start? :suspect: Answer: Sorry wanted someone to scream WELL THANKS FOR RUINING THE FILM FOR ME! :D sorry, i am tres naughty! hehehe! Answer: I saw this on sunday - two big  from me, though I did initially think it was odd how clear the snipers voice was...like I was expecting some 22khz fuzz what with it being over a phone and all - this would have been the obvious thing to do, so I think it qualifies as "interesting" that they chose not to......either way, very cool ;) Answer: It was all-right. Short and (mostly) sweet. Farrell is definitely a star, The jury is in - he's got it, like it or not!!! But the film, Seven in a phone booth, is popcorn fodder, instantly forgettable (if quite-good-in-a-one-time-only-deal) - watch its time-and-place contemporary 25th Hour in a double bill and judge it then! Not dreadful. But I wont be watching it again or watching it on DVD. Answer: Just seen this. Thought it was great - a really intense thriller. The ending was a bit rushed, but I was surprised how quickly the time went. Most films, I'm looking at my watch after an hour because I get the fidgets  Had to see it on my own because thanks to Bristol GWR FM and their inability to keep from giving away spoilers, cedge knew how it ended, so wasn't interested in seeing it. Answer: Good film for one or two views, crap ending Answer: I haven't seen this yet (intend to) or read any spoilers, but the basic premise reminds me of the film 'Liberty Stands Still'. Similar? Answer: Well, went to see it last night with Mrs Flib, I thought it was great, she thought it was nothing special  Not sure it would stand up to repeat viewings, but I would heartily recommend you watch this one :) Answer:  from me too! Expected the voice to be Frazier Crane and was suprised at the end! Great movie! Not a bloke in a wooly costume to be seen! Answer: I seem to be at odds with most people in this thread - unusual for me as I'm quite easily pleased. Wasn't mad keen on this at all myself - would have made a good TV show I suppose. Actually preferred the sniper episode of CSI Miami a few weeks ago - and it's not like I'm a massive fan of that show (I can take it or leave it). Love Kiefer Sutherland (although more for his earlier stuff than Jack Bauer/Phone Booth) but thought he hammed it up a bit too much, and I had zero sympathy for Colin Farrell's character. Laughed rather than cried during his 'speech' - too corny. Plus 'Get shot in the face or admit to your wife that you talked to another girl on the phone' - ooh, tough choice. Was that the best they could come up with in terms of leverage? And surely the sniper could have found a more worthwhile target if he was indeed on some crusade - something else which was never really explained, to my satisfaction at least Surprised to see people claiming 'best performance of his career' for both actors. Would quite happily have seen Colin Farrell shot through the teeth :D Thought this was the worst performance I've seen from him. For such a simple concept I thought there were far too many weakpoints in the script. The near zero character development was perhaps forgiveable given the one location problem but we were teased by depth for almost every character only to have it cruelly whipped away without any expansion. The whole 'it's going to happen again' hints with Forest Whitaker's character were particularly tiresome and ultimately pointless. Anyway, who cares cos you all loved it? :) Personally I thought it was all smoke and mirrors designed to hide the fact that when they came to develop what sounded like a good idea they found there had no meat to put on the bones. Answer: Fantastic, a new entry in my Top10 Movies! ... suprisingly short though. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.todayaq.com
